It was nearly impossible to get the correct exposure and lock on a focal point in the few seconds I had to shoot each pass.

I've had good success fixing exposure by shooting raw and using some post processing. Those pics look good to me.

What was your aperture? I think your shutter was probably faster than it needed to be.

I was shooting in TV at 1250, so the aperture ranged from 4-8 (depending the clouds and lens I had on).

Sweet spot on aperture is usually 8-11, that's when lenses are sharpest.

ETA: When I shoot sprint cars I usually start with 1/500 and f8 during the daytime, adjust ISO as needed with clouds going in and out.

Third, forth, and fifth are sweet. A little tight on the crop on #2

Ok..finally went thru all my video snippets from the day, merged them into a few longer videos and then uploaded them to YouTube...

Unfortunately I didn't get any video of the P51 Mustang. It was getting closer to the end of the day when it flew and my 7 and 4 yr olds were getting a little antsy. I must have taken them to see some of the other static displayed planes when it was flying.

Anyway, here's what I got. It's all iPhone video so not the best quality, but it's something.

Air Show pt. 1

Air Show pt. 2

Air Show pt. 3

Blue Angels pt. 1

Blue Angels pt. 2

That's a beautiful P-51. Too bad they gave it improper insignia. It's got the black & white D-Day stripes (June '44) while having the red striped national marking that didn't exist until 1947.

ETA:
You can downvote it all you want. But what you can't do is change the fact I'm right.

Also the first time I've seen a mustang with a black paint scheme. Im assuming this guy may have just been going for whatever he thought looked cool.

I will say, the black does look cool.

I've never seen it either. And that marking on the rudder. It looks similar to a French WWI squadron (3rd Escadrille) insignia....

... but it was never used in any American aircraft in WWII that I've ever seen.

I've gotten to watch the blue angels fly in Pensacola for practice several times, and it never gets old. I have not seen a live air show before besides that. I wish Lafayette would get the pissy lil air show back that they had for a few years. I am looking forward to seeing the angels fly this summer when we go on vacay.

I shoot Aero all the time, it seems like you don't have your camera set up for Aero work. My question would be is do you have your focus on the shutter button or another button? I set up the shutter for metering only and use one of the back buttons for focusing. I shoot anywhere from 1/200 up to 1/2000 for jets.

I would have maybe got a few good ones of the static displays and a lot of pictures of half a plane and some clouds. Also a couple of my fingers.

While I get your point, the restoration of this bird was never intended to be period/theater/battle/war correct. It was intended as a memorial/appreciation/celebration of our armed forces...

From their website:

Youtube Walkaround.

quote:

QUICK SILVER “THE RESURRECTED VETERAN”

This P-51 is a celebration of our nation’s armed forces. Every aspect of the paint represents those who have served, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The black cape covering the front of the aircraft represents the veil of protection that our armed forces give us. That veil is one of the reasons why we have what we have today, freedom.

As the cape extends to the back of the canopy, it spreads out and divides into feathers, symbolizing the eagle that has flown with every aviator since the birth of aviation in 1903.

The black paint has tiny sparkling stars in it, each sparkle represents an American Veteran that served our great country; the unsung stars in our lives. These veterans are the glimmering star in a mother’s eye, a wife or husband’s heart, a son or daughter’s hope for the future.

The silver ring behind the spinner represents the shinning halo of the guardian angel who guides service personnel, having given the ultimate sacrifice, to their final resting place.

The black and white stripes on the wings are there, as they were on all allied aircraft on D-day.

The stars and bars, proudly displayed, represent the armed forces symbol that all United States fighter planes carry. It carries the post war version because “Quick Silver” was never a part of a unit till after World War 2.

All of the bare metal of this P-51 Mustang is polished. Look closely into the metal, you can see for whom our veterans fought.

Bill Yoak, an individual with a love and passion for this type aircraft did all of the metal work. The remanufactured parts are handmade. Unlike the hurried war effort parts, these are made with the skill and care of a master craftsman, and obtain the utmost attention to detail necessary to restore this Mustang to a condition better than factory new in 1945.

As this silver bird quickly streaks across the sky, let us not forget those who served, sacrificed, and gave their all.

God Bless America!!!
