Perfectly acceptable. I don't even know why a parent would have an issue with this.

I think that have standards that children have to follow is the right approach. But I also think if you appear to be punitive or petty, you become part of the problem.

Pete, are you teaching English or Business writing?
I am a science teacher actually. The kids would be fricked if I had to teach them English.
What I ask of them is really basic.

My kids go to a Catholic school. There are times when they say that their teacher wants is "stupid" and my answer is tough cookies. You do it the way they say and that's all there is to it (I mean unless it's somethig that puts them in harms way or something but if they say format it this way, they better format it that way or take their lumps.)

What do you guys think?
If this is an english or lit class, then i would say its ok because thats the point. For a class like history or science I would cut a little more slack.
ETA: Saw your response.
What sort of points off are we talking, like a letting grade or 1% of grade or what.

WTF?! If that is what the education system promotes, then I am home schooling my girls. Thats beyond dumb.

I have never taken off more than 5 points total deductions.
Generally it is 1-2 points for margins depending on the severity.
If they didn't follow instructions, I usually go up to 5 points off depending on the severity.

It was the same for me in grade school... When I bitched to my parents my dad would just say, "Neat and pristine... You should have pride in your work."
To this day I remember those words

You sound like a commie dictator, way to teach them to think outside the lines or in this case, write.

It was an in class assignment. Personally thought the assignment was fine. They were to draw a pic to help describe a short story they were reading and use hashtags to describe the story. Just thought it was odd for points being taken off for not using hashtags correctly considering the anti social media stance of the school. The pic was accompanied with a standard short answer set of questions..

I have a policy of deducting points off of assignments when the students write in the margins or don't follow the instructed format. I also deduct points for assignments turned in crumpled, folded up, or stained.
Is this part of the curriculum/objectives you are employed to teach?

Sounds perfectly acceptable to me, this was something I grew up with.
