I'm not entirely sure what age I started reading them, but The Giver and The Wrinkle in Time were awesome books.. but it might still be a couple years ahead.

When I was about that age I read The Hobbit. It's a classic after all.

Dogman is another series by the Capt. Underpants author. My 8 yr old asked for those for Christmas

There are a literal TON of great (light) history books for that age that young boys will devour. Anything about the Revolutionary War or WW2 was my shite.

For fiction: Bridge to Terebithia, The Hobbit, and Charlotte's Web are all right near that age range, especially if Mom and Dad still read with them. Chronicles of Narnia or Chronicles of Prydain if they're a little advanced, as well.

Pendragon was a great young readers series. I really enjoyed every book in that series. That and Harry Potter introduced me to reading
