OT orthopedic surgeons. Heel/ankle question
Posted on 9/21/16 at 5:01 pm

I suffered a foot injury in the early morning hours on Friday involving about a 15 foot fall. It's slightly bruised around the ankle joint with minimal swelling around the ankle and heel area. Noticeably uncomfortable to put pressure on my heel. I've been just limping around on the all of my foot the past few days.
Just rub some dirt on it and stop being a pussy or could I be in need of medical attention? Even if it's a small fracture to the heel bone would that need surgery or just let it heel ?

I'm an MRI tech and suggest getting an MRI and at least a walking boot

Could be a nondisplaced fracture or a sprain/strain
If it were displaced, youd probably have already visited the ER!
Id at least go get some X-rays or a CT done to make sure
*not a MD

Go to an urgent care. They'll take a couple x-rays. If its fractured they'll send you to an ortho. If not, prescribe you some anti-inflammatories, tell you to ice, rest, and wrap for 4-6 weeks.

Can't help, but that sucks. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Fracture of your calcaneus? Go to ortho

You could have a ligament issue and find yourself in a boot for 6-8 weeks. Go see ortho.

You need an xray...preferably of your calcaneous. It's probably fractured. No lower back pain?

If you have a primary care physician and are still having difficulty weight bearing, see them tomorrow. They can order an x-ray and many foot fractures can be safely watched in as little as a supportive shoe. That said, you could also have one that requires a boot, splint, or even a cast. The latter ones often should also have an orthopedic surgeon evaluate them.
If you do not have a primary care physical, an urgent care will usually have on site x-ray, which would be beneficial in your case. It also works hurt to head here tonight and to your PCP or Ortho in the morning, but they're typically a bit more expensive than if you were established somewhere.
But most importantly, ELEVATE the injured extremity above your heart tonight. It's an awfully goofy position, but it's going to save you so much pain.
If weight bearing hurts, stop bearing weight until you've been evaluated. If you do have access to crutches, it's OK to use them until you're told you don't need them. If there is a fracture, sometimes "walking it off" can turn a simple issue into a much more serious one.
And lastly, use tylenol (acetaminophen) but don't exceed 3000mg from all sources
AND
one NSAID. If you don't follow the label, please don't exceed 800mg every 8 hours with ibuprofen or 440mg every 12 hours with ibuprofen. I know it probably hurts, but more than this is unsafe for your kidney and stomach. Elevation and ice are your key to needing less medicine. More just isn't safe.

If you are in BR, BR ortho has an after hours ortho clinic on bluebonnet , go there and get an x ray, I would feel much better having them read the film called what you would find in a doc n a box

no. really no pain at all until i put weight on my heel. as long as i walk on the ball of my foot then its really only discomfort.
