Well, I will say the Courtyard Marriott is a nice addition. The Hampton is getting old. Texas Roadhouse, Whataburger, chili's...all that is ok..the downtown area has some cool stuff, but Ruston is super small

Johnny's pizza is nice

Public schools suck in Tangi Parish.

This is true and very unfortunate. We send our kid to private school.

Honestly I enjoy living here. You’ve got all the necessities, having a Home Depot and Academy is niceI love downtown, great small town atmosphere. They are always doing stuff downtown, some good places to eat too. The bar scene was great when i was of bar going age, I understand it has gone downhill big time especially for a college town that has really grown up around Southeastern.

Location is really great. You can be in BR, NOLA, or north shore in 45 mins. Traffic generally isn’t bad.

I think this has to do with being in the notch between Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas.

nice downtown area,

Wtf

If you think this you live a dull and miserable life. You probably vacation at Dollywood and thinks Chili’s is fancy.

If you move to Hammond, I'll let you take me to Red, White, and Brew so you can buy everyone some $400 Scotch and pass it around!

Really though, I grew up in Hammond and now live 15 mins outside of it. It's growing. Every year or so we seem to get one of those franchises that people go to BR, Nola, North shore for..like home depot, academy, things like that. They keep adding new places to eat, and to be honest the local non-chains are awesome places to eat. Cate Street Seafood, The Steakhouse (one of the best steaks I have ever had), Tope' La, and Jacmel Inn are all outstanding. Some of pricer than others, but outstanding. Lee's Drive Inn and Tommy's Pizza are two cornerstones for eatery in Hammond.

The crowd at Hammond have become a little more... aggressive. Crime is up in the city, but still nothing compared to BR and Nola. The worst of it is at the Hammond Walmart, which stopped being 24/7 because of it for awhile... The new Ponchatoula Walmart took most of the better shoppers, so just don't go into that parking lot and you should be fine. Car break ins have increased in the last year. If you build down here, a garage would help prevent that.

Schools are horrible. They just elected a new School Board Superintendent, so maybe that will help... but doubtful. Tangi School board is full of politicians.

The Edwards run the parish and are always looking for political ways to make money. They tried to get that casino that is failing in Boisser onto some of the land once part of their extended family and adjacent to some their extended family now. Basically all the parish wide officials are part of the Edwards machine. I suspect the proposed development of Port Manchac has some kind of Edwards involvement somewhere.

The school board has a bunch of lawyers sucking off their budget and have yet to settle a discrimination lawsuit from the sixties and they probably never will so long as it generates money for the lawyers. They lost a lot of creditability a couple of years ago with voters when they instituted a plan to correct the discrimination that some would say it the last forced busing plan in the USA. They named a bunch of schools "magnet" schools but that is just in name as there have been very few students drawn to the schools. The door on the principle's office in Hammond must be a revolving type as it the place people go to retire and up their drop payment. Tangi schools are rated "C" as a district with only 1 A rated school and it is the lab school at SLU. Contrast that with Livingston that is rated A and 29 A rated schools. If you want to go to public schools but be close to Hammond consider Springfield. All the private schools in Tangi have record enrollment. Prior to the busing plan being implemented I think both Loranger and Ponchatoula schools were A and B rated.

Downtown is nice and Ponchatoula is pretty nice.

been in hammond 12 years now

places not to go:
-walmart
-areas west of morrison and south of 190 between morrison & range
-any gas station or convenience store more than 0.5 miles from an interstate exit

avoid the above and you'll think you live in mayberry

I actually live in Springfield and would recommend the school to anybody who will listen.I don't have much experience with the high school and the middle school, but my oldest is in the elementary school and my youngest will be starting in August.

good stuff in hammond:

-saturday farmers market downtown
-downtown in general...food & drink
-gnarly barley brewery on saturday afternoons
-an hour to NO
-20 minutes to manchac/maurepas/lake p, boating, fishing, etc
-20 minutes to covington/mandeville without all the traffic you deal with by living there
-plenty of places to live with land (i'm on 6 acres)
-decent scenery when SLU is in session
-no traffic unless you are always near 190/morrison (which you should avoid anyway); roads are in good shape
-decent retail (depot/lowes/academy/etc)
-5 minutes to ponchatoula for a change of pace/scenery
-20 minutes to springfield/tickfaw/blood
-easy to get out of state on 55 for a road trip
-the white trash is slightly more evolved than in LP
-the best GA airport in the state

bad stuff in hammond
-public schools
-hammond police/TPSO
-the ghetto is GHETTO (think somalian refugee camp)
-discount retail of any kind is off-limits
-not much in the way of decent rental housing if thats your thing
-proximity to LP allows from some bleed-over from their natives
