Decent place to live and raise a family or nah?

I’ve been and handful of times and seems like a nice little college town, nice downtown area, and relatively nice place. It’s not on par with Covington, Abita Springs, or Mandeville, but would you consider it in the same tier as Ruston?

Public schools suck in Tangi Parish.

better than Ruston. All Ruston has is literally a Walmart. Hammond has a little mall, Target, better shite than Ruston

Hammond is a dump.

Not sure why youd live there with St Tammany next door.

If you’re black, you can send your kid to PHS so they don’t go to a failing school system. If you’re white, STA is your answer.

I lived there on and off for about 15 years. I moved there in 88, it wasn't so bad. My mom, brother, and ex-wife(and 2 kids) live there. It would take a LOT to consider moving back there.

There was a shooting near SLU this past year and according to this board Hammond isn't what it use to be.

That's all I know and my information is strictly based on what I read from this board.

Hammond is a great town with good private schools. Great place to raise a family.

I like Hammond... decent place IMO. The public schools suck arse though. Be prepared to pay for private schooling.

I grew up in Ponchatoula. You couldn't pay me enough money to move back to Ponchatoula/Hammond.

I've been all over Hammond and I've never felt unsafe anywhere. Hammond had a shooting... places like BR and NOLA have multiple shootings in 1 day.

Ever see a property tax statement in St Tammany? Voters there love to tax themselves.

Hammond is actually a fairly decent place to live.

Proximity there is ideal. You can get to BR or NOLA in 45 min - 1 hr. and only about a 3 hr drive to the gulf coast.
The downtown area is really nice. Lot of restaurants, bars and places to shop around.
Good, safe neighborhoods.
Great place to raise a family if you're going the private school route. Wouldn't recommend if you're planning to send your kids to public school.

That’s one of the things that interests me about Hammond. It seems to offer a lot of the same benefits as the other areas without the yuppies of those areas.

IMO your analysis is accurate. I really like that old downtown area. Some of the areas are a bit rough of course but it has its nice spots and a lot of amenities for a smallish town.

I like Hammond. It is kind of different though, in that the old influential families seem to have an isolationist kind of mindset.

Housing runs the gambit, but the newer subdivisios are mainly in Ponchatoula and Robert.

There is a good bit to do in Hammond (SLU) and they have a pretty good food scene.

As for schools...

St. Thomas is a good school but is very small. As a result, it is very clique based. I still would send my child there though.

Ponchatoula is pretty solid for a public school. It has some issues, but I think it is acceptable. I would also send my child here too without much concern.

Hammond is now a magnet school, which means it is much better than in the past. However, it is a tall climb out of that hole. That being said, I would not rule it out as a result of the changes that were made.

Hammond isn't West St. Tammany in terms of what is offered, but it is a viable option imo. One last thing, the taxes are lower in Tangipihoa Parish as opposed to St. Tammany.

Good luck.
