My duty stations: Orlando, San Diego, Jacksonville. Two Mediterranean cruises across Europe and a dry dock in Norfolk. While in dry dock we lived in hotel with a cafeteria. I would say my 4 years in navy were pretty damn good.

Osan, South Korea. 1990. Songton Sally, BJ Ally, it was a great year, It'll probably take 10 years off the end of my life...

I read through this whole thread. Good stuff and thank you all for your service. Not a veteran, but grew up a military brat with a military grandpa who met his wife in Italy and never left. My mom grew up over there and met my dad when he was stationed at Comiso AFB in the early 90s.
I grew up living and traveling all over the world because of the opportunities the military provided the men in my family. My summers were spent about 20 minutes outside NAS Sigonella in Sicily at my grandparents. She was a local who spoke English and worked as a translator. He ran DODD Schools. Could only imagine Sig was one hell of a stop for a young 18-27 year old.

Went to pilot training at Columbus AFB and loved it. Middle of nowhere Mississippi where all that was required was learning to fly and getting drunk with my buddies. I was one of the only non AF academy grads in my class and it was a hoot watching those guys basically live what should’ve been their freshman year of college.
Nothing about the experience was “the real Air Force”. No additional duties, no OPRs, no bullshite. Just flying, drinking, and hunting north Mississippi(didn’t hurt that LSU played in Starkville and Tuscaloosa the year I was there).

Fort Sam Houston (now Joint Base San Antonio).

Not sure what “I&I Staff” is...
Active Component Marines who support a Reserve Component Marine unit.
Personally wish we would do away with the AGR program (ARNG and USAR) and assign Active Component Soldiers to do similar duties with the Reserve Component. Will never happen though.
(And I have been a USAR AGR since 2004)

Hoping to get Hawaii or Florida on my next rotation.

Curious why you feel this way. I’m not an AGR, but I work with several. From an AF perspective the program seems to do a good job of keeping the best reservists around the unit who would normally only be in once or twice a month. People that would normally be at an airline job.
ETA: not butt hurt about your take on AGRs, just genuinely curious about why the alternative of having the AD supplement the guard and reserve is better.

quote:There you have it my Herk driving brother. Myriad of issues I could cite, but the biggest issue is accessions. We simply do not have the quality we need. I have done quite well but I had seven years enlisted (SSG E6) and thirteen years as an officer (MAJ) before I came over to the program. Our AGR staff hurt readiness more than help it (just being frank). You need the grounding that comes from an AC viewpoint (but from a cultural perspective, our AC loathe working with the RC).
From an AF perspective...
I attended the USAWC with an USAFR LtCol AGR. He worked at the Pentagon but was C-5 qualified. He talked to me about “sharing iron” and it is a brilliant concept. He talked about how the Reserve Components were so well integrated that they were almost seamless in their efforts. That culture (unfortunately) does not exist in the Army.
If we are ever going to be a Total Force we have to knock down the AC/RC barriers. And the AGR program in the USAR is an enabler (not in a good way) to keep the components apart.
My two cents.

Yeah, that’s not really the case in my unit(can’t speak the the reserve component as a whole). Our AGRs are typically people that would have excelled on active duty(unlike my slack arse, I just like driving airplanes). My neighbor is an Army AGR attached to an Army reserve unit, and he’s always struck me as a hard charger, but I don’t work with him and he’s just one guy.
Now I know.

I went to AIT there in 92 from September to December. That place was great
That's where I was for 52B30 Power Equipment Repairman, also. First time I ever flew in an airplane was from Alexandria, LA. to a small airfield somewhere in northern Virginia. Loved it...

No kidding. I swear going to the “blue sto” for wings was always an event. We were allowed to wear our cammies and dudes would haul arse when we pulled up.

my dad was stationed in panama in the army back in the very early 80s, i was probably a mistake judging by some of the stories
k-bay was ok, but i saw everything i needed to see in 6 months
hated okinawa, maybe it was the restrictions but just didn’t get a good feel for the area
sigonella was awesome in the early 2000s
had a great time in kef in the early 2000s, had a crazy nude bar where all the servicemembers would go, great views.
one regret is never having the chance to go to Rota
brunswick, maine had great memories there because of the people, as a 21 year old we would walk 3-4 cars deep and own the bars/clubs
patuxent river was ok, same scenery every weekend and everyone knew everyone for the most part, loved playing roller hockey there
jacksonville was boring
currently in whidbey and it’s ok, been here a 3years and only got to spend one summer, winter weather is absolutely shitty, plan on hitting some of the high peaks this summer
