I have a 2005 Acura TL and with 116k mikes on it. A couple of weeks ago it started making a faint rattling noise, and it has gotten progressively worse since then. I mostly hear it when I’m at a stop or when I brake. The noise will stop when I put it in park though.

I tried googling what it could be and I’ve found everything from loose heat shield (which is what I think it is), to low oil pressure, to transmission problems (bad clutch).

A few things: check engine light has NOT come on, the oil level is fine, and I actually replaced the transmission a year ago (and I only put maybe 5k miles a year on it) so I’m assuming it’s not an oil pressure or tranny problem. After driving for a while I’ll also smell a faint burning smell from the engine which is also a symptom of bad heat shields, but of course could be a sign of other problems.

Is my car safe to drive for now until I take it to a mechanic Monday? I really need to make a beer run but don’t want to drive it if there’s a chance of doing any irreparable damage.
Thanks for any advice!

It's going to stop making the noise now that you posted about it.

Have you checked the turn signal fluid?

1. That’s a hard diagnosis to make over the internet.
2. If all fluid levels are good, could be a bad motor mount. When the engine is in gear, the motor torques over, which could be exaggerated with a bad motor mount, allowing the exhaust to rattle and touch something it shouldn’t, Causing a smell.

Yes. And the flux capacitor.

Transmission being replaced at 116K miles is very unusual for any car, especially an Acura. Heat shield is what I first thought of when I read your post.

There’s your problem.

More than zero mikes on a car is not acceptable.

Remove them and I’ll bet your problem goes away.

this is so untrue. Acuras are notorious for crappy transmissions, especially torque converters, which could be the problem.

If sound is when braking, check brake pads for sure. You can prob see without taking off wheel. Turn wheel outward and look for clip that squeals when pad wears out.

Could be bearings, heat shield, universal joints, converter several other causes. Could be loose needle in ujoint.

If you link it to transmission. And decide to have it fixed, make sure you have motor mounts replaced. They are most likely the root cause of acuras trans problems.

One of the engine mounts probably had the rubber dry up and shrink. Probably an upper mount. Have another person stick a screw driver tip on the mount when it is making noise. Should he able to feel the vibration/rattle through the screwdriver handle.

Failing catalytic converter. Basically, the guts coming no out of it. It will cause an obnoxious rattle.

Heat shields, catalytic converter catalyst material beaking down and rattling, exhaust hardware getting loose...lots of potential causes. When you put the car in gear the engine/transmission will shift in reaction to the torque being applied to the wheels but the wheels are being held by the brake. That shifting is probably putting something into contact with a loose part which is causing the rattle. Worn engine/transmission mounts will exacerbate the issue. Does the noise decrease if the car is put in drive and you release the brakes? Comes back when you start to accelerate or apply the brake?
