OT Mechanics-Check engine light question

So about a week and a half ago my check engine light came on. It's a 2006 Pontiac with 120,000 miles. When I got my oil changed I asked 'ol boy to do a diagnostic check. The code came back as my transmission (I noticed it skipping a little). I called a buddy of mine and he suggested putting some Lucas Oil brand transmission stuff in it to help the skip. It got better and today my check engine light is not on. I had to get my emissions test today and my car passed. My question is this: Since the check engine light is off does this mean that my transmission is ok? I have absolutely no idea about cars...

Your transmission has nothing to do with emissions. But saying your transmission is "ok" is probably false. You helped it but there is some underlying issue that was making it slip that hasn't gone away because of Lucas Oil

It means the Lucas temporarily fixed the issue causing the fault code, how temporary the fix is anybody's guess

Check engine lights come on for just about any problem, including car AIDS.

Was that the first time you serviced the transmission? Slipping can occur if you are low on ATF. Are there any apparent leaks at the bottom of the transmission or by the axle/bearing assembly?
120,000 is a lot of miles for a GM transmission but my Pontiac had 140,000 before I traded it.

Probably have a bad solenoid in the transmission. The Lucas crap didn't fix it nor did it have anything to do with the check engine light going off. We're the battery cables in hooked for any reason? Did the guy reset the code when checking the light? Also some states that require emissions testing will fail you for having a check engine light on , period. Doesn't matter if it's trans related or engine. If it's on , it's not passing inspection. The light will be back and your looking at replacing a PC Solenoid , most likely.

Nothing was disconnected. The light just didn't come on today when I started so I went to get my emissions done

As long as the check transmission light doesn't come on you're good

My check engine light stays on. And everytime I start it, I check, and the engine is still there. WTF

Solid.
Low fluid may have tripped a sensor, causing the light to come on.

No, they won't magically repair themselves. Once they being to show signs of trouble then it's just a matter of time before it's done.
Probably looking at around $4,000 to replace it with a rebuilt transmission.

Check engines lights can be tricky if its not a consistent issue. In my case, it isn't consistent and I know my problem so I don't necessarily care.

What do you mean by "skip?" If your transmission hesitates when trying to change gears, then you may just need new spark plugs.

disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait a few seconds and reattach it. Be sure to leave a window rolled down when you do this. Some vehicles electronics get surge when you reattach it and the if you have power locks they may lock automatically. On lots of cars this will reset the check engine light. If it comes back on in a day or so take it to a mechanic.
