OT Mechanics- Transmission question

I have a 2008 Altima with a CVT transmission. It has 206,000 miles on it and its been a great car.
Driving to Austin yesterday and was cruising at 75MPH, and all of a sudden the transmission started slipping and the RPMs went from 2k to 3/4k and it was straining bad. It was making a whining noise.
I pulled over and stopped and checked fluid levels. all is good. When i restarted it and got back on the highway it was just fine. Got to my destination, and on my way back to Dallas it started doing it again. It only did it when i went above 60MPH. I was able to white knuckle it home, and its been fine under 60 MPH.
I know something is wrong, and im going to take it in tomorrow to get it looked it, but my question is how long do you think i can drive it before its done completely? I really wasnt in the mood to buy a car right now. TIA

Your car isn't worth a new transmission, so start shopping

Lol I know. Trust me I’m not dumping 3k into it
Just really wasn’t ready right now. I was hoping to get through 2018

Im in this business so listen to me and ignore the rest of these shadetree douchebags in this thread.
It needs to be replaced. CVT parts and repair procedures are just now coming out so not many shops are repairing them. You are looking around 3200-3500 to replace the unit. Hope this helps.

Fix it for 3k. Drive it for another year. Save money.
New car note on something similar is around 500. 12 x 500= 6000.00. Save yourself 3000 and when you do go trade or sell it it in it has more value. Nobody will give you shite for it with a bad transmission.

average new altima price is 23k
estimated sales tax 9%
estimated interest 7%
note comes out to be 496.00 per month
at 4.5% interest is $467
467 x 12 = 5604
5604 - 3000 = 2604 in savings

So y’all would put 3500-4000 in a 10 year old car vs putting that towards a 2017/2018 used car that’s similar?

What kinda schmuck gets a new car loan at 7% ?

3500
If you drive it another year you get that money back and its worth more working. Take the money you save 2000-3000 over that year and put it towards a new car if you want one or keep driving it and save 450-500 a month.

Yeah buy a used CVT. Who is gonna put it in? I just quoted a girl to install a cvt on a 2010 Maxima. 1350 plus tax and fluid.

the internal drive belts are probably worn out in the transmission. cvt's operate on a belt between two cogs that are like the hubs of a drill press, they change position to allow for different speeds.

We have a Nissan rouge at the office with the same transmission and problems. We were quoted 4k by diamond Mazda to replace it. It has been sitting for 3 months now. Gonna trade it in soon.

Na.
Your Altima is $100 scrap with a bad transmission, and putting a new one in for 3k increases it’s value to $1500, and that’s not really worth it.
If I was you I would find something like a 2015 Altima for 12-13k. Find a dealer that doesn’t notice the bad tranny and get 1500 for it, put 3k down and finance 10k for 3 years.
