Trying to teach them all that just because something breaks on a car, even an old car, you get it running if it makes economic sense.

Unless you are getting the $300 alternator, seems a bit high.

Call around where you live and price the alternator at O'Reilly's Auto, NAPA, Auto Zone, etc. At least see what the part costs to replace. The rest is labor. Then you can decide if it's high or not. Check YouTube to see if there is a video on how to change it and it will give you an idea of how long it takes to do. I'd at least get the alternator fixed and have the sunroof moved back to the closed position. Then tape over the seams so that she won't use it until you can check it our yourself to see if it's worth it to fix or just seal and pull the fuse. Depends on how much you want to throw into an older used vehicle for her to drive.

I had the alternator changed on my 05 for $225, can't help with the sun roof question

I would say the moon roof is leaking.

Also the moonroof is jammed open and the seal is gone
