OT Magicians – an auction for vintage props is scheduled for January 11th in Houston

Houston Chronicle article - 02Jan2020
I was a table-side magician in Houston's popular restaurants for 10 years and got to know Lonnie and his team very well. I can only imagine the arsenal of props and gags he kept for himself over the years. If you were lucky enough to visit Magic Island, the props you saw all through the venue were his.

Magic fans have a unique opportunity to bid on vintage magic items owned by Lonnie Frankel – as in Frankel’s Costume Shop.
Thousands of items, from makeup to special magicians’ tools, are up for grabs from Frankel’s personal collection. Frankel helped run the now-shuttered Frankel’s Costume Shop, a family business and Houston staple since 1950.
In 2018, the shop closed after nearly 70 years in business. Now, two years after the closing, fans can get their hands on one-of-a-kind items owned by Lonnie Frankel at an auction.
The auction will be 9 a.m. Jan. 11 at Gallery Auction at 13310 Luthe Road in north Houston. For more information, and to see more pieces in the auction, visit the Gallery Auction website.

No shite. I have to sift through mounds of crap on this board and when I finally find a potential diamond, I get no follow up.

I had dabbled in close up magic, like cards and coins, during high school and just got more into it while in college. eventually I took lessons from Lonnie Frankel and Richard Hatch here in Houston around how to be an entertaining performer, not “just a guy that does magic tricks”.
Soon after I got invited by a family friend to Perform magic for their kids’ backyard birthday party, other parents were there and it just took off. I was soon a regular on Friday nights at a different Pappas restaurant for 5 years. When it came to holidays like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day where restaurants often put up a big tent outside, I would be in those tents just going from group to group performing fun close-up magic. It took a long time for me develop my slights and a very short amount of time to lose them. Some are obviously easy and some are hard (and VERY angle specific). I still show my kids, ages 10 and 13, sleights/tricks I'm still able to do and they love it.
And for those who may be wondering, Shin Lim, to me, is the most talented magician performer on the planet. The slights he performs are extremely difficult and he pulls them off with apparent ease and nothing short of pure eloquence. Watching him perform is a beautiful art.
And yes, I know how many “tricks” are done and when a sleight is being performed (as opposed to using a gimmick deck or prop). But that does not mean for a second that I am capable of performing those sleights. Equate it to this: i’ve played sports my whole life and have been very good at everything I’ve ever played, but was nowhere near good enough to play professionally. Knowing when a slight has been performed and seeing it performed effortlessly and cleanly is more mind blowing to me than being on the other side seeing the magic happen. I appreciate it much more as an art form.
