Yep. frick that shop for trying to extort OP after he offered a more than fair deal for them. He shouldn't have offered them a cent.

As with everything, there's always more to the story. The OP did make the offer. What happened on the other side is where it gets convoluted.

He isn't picking it up from the shop. The police are in possession of it now. He likely won't have any contact with the shop, although I would love to see it.
