watching “Story of Us” again last night and while watching it, you get the idea of how terrible the conditions were for American Patriots in the Revolutionary War. They then moved on to the Great Migration. For those of you that don’t know, this is the migration to the west to the Pacific.

With that said, who do you think had it worse? Settlers on the trail to the west through the Rocky Mountain range and Lewis and Clark or soldiers going through war?

I understand bullets flying at your face but what about the conditions these people had to deal with into lands unknown. Not sure if you’re going to make it the next day or dying of terrible diseases never seen before and starvation (Donner Party)?

Bro, you ever tried to ford a river without all your oxen and one of your kids dying?

I hate long road trips so put me down for fighting in the war.

Cannibalism?

I don’t know a ton about the Revolutionary War.

I think a more relatable comparison would be who had it worse? Immigrants living in urban tenements or migrants heading west...

What do you think fighting a war in the 18th century consisted of? Hanging out in one spot?

And for most soldiers, that meant hoofing it on foot with really crappy shoes. On occasion, just cloth wrapped feet.

OK, smartass. I had to pick one of the two choices.

Marching 20 miles to the next battle site >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> marching 2000 miles to the west coast

I would imagine marching 2000 total miles in a campaign wasn't too far fetched

both would suck equally bad, but I would have to go with Revolutionary Soldiers having it worse, but trailblazers to the west did not have it easy, the threat of death (Natives, starvation, disease etc..) they knew death was ever present, but soldiers are looking death in the face across the battlefield with nowhere to hide with the way the wars were fought.

Yeah but you get to stop for longer periods of time while you kill Brits... plus you don't have to worry about Indians cutting off your scalp.

The Brits has the Indians on their side so that’s not completely out of the question.

Biggest difference is that for the soldier, it was an individual experience. For the westward migration, it was more often than not a family experience. I know that women and children had roles in the Revolutionary War, but rarely were they combat roles. On the overland trails, the women and children shared the same experiences as the men.

If aren't limiting westward expansion to the Rockies, then this wins easily.

Dodging Comanches' efforts to torture me, cut my balls off and stuff them in my mouth, only to enter a land devoid of landmarks with barely any water...

I'll take the Revolutionary War over the Texas frontier, for sure.
