The wife and I have been going to the same dentist for about 3 years. It seems like clockwork that every other visit they find 1-2 cavities for each of us (meaning once a year they find this). We're starting to find it a bit interesting since we've as we've never had more cavities than when we started going to this office. As a reference, I had never had a cavity before and the wife has only had 2 before. We're both early thirties.

Any opinions on over diagnosing cavities? They mentioned they were being "conservative" on their approach, but I can't imagine getting one to two fillings a year for the next 30 years....

Ask him who checks him for cavities and go there.

Medicare or medicaid paying?

Saw a pretty terrible store of a dentist doing unecessary procedures and pulling teeth that didn't need it to make a killing from insurance payments.

Welcome to the new world order.

My motto from my younger days is, "a hole is a hole."

Ruzil will be here shortly. I trust him. You should too.

That does sound suspicious. I don't trust a dentist who doesn't let one ride. I like it when they tell me they are going to start watching a spot. Certain dentists probably just go ahead and fill it.

This guy works in a practice that is rapidly expanding - adding 10 more chairs recently and opening a second location. I have no doubt being "conservative" is helpful to cash flow.

I seriously doubt he's just making up cavities.

You might have had a lot of areas that your old dentist didn't care about and this guy is finally treating them and just being conservative and only doing a couple spots every visit.

He also just might be super aggressive and the areas he see just starting to form he just fills them anyways

This is probably more likely, but at what rate? Do all areas starting to form turn in to full cavities?

Find another dentist.

Dentists are are just about equal to chiropractors on the trust scale.

It's quite common. I recently went for a cleaning after 12 years of no dentist visit where the previous visit, I was told I have two cavities.

I was told I have no cavities and my teeth and gums are as strong as he has seen.

The former dentist is a known ripoff artist with hotdogs for fingers. frick that guy.

Edit...my fricking phone is atrocious at changing words. Jesus.

He's saving you from a crown and/or root canal later. You should thank his arse and brush your teeth better.

I think the number of cavities that show up depend a whole lot on how heavy handed they are with that pick...they can find a weak spot and accelerate the process if they want to do so...

Dentists are salesmen. The more "issues" they find, the more they make.

Not all. But it is a problem. It's hard to pay for golf memberships, beach condos and BMWs working 3.5 days a week though. You got to cut them some slack.

I find this to be true as well. Just dumped my dentist because there is always a new treatment every time I come in.
