I'm a quality manager so I have a little background on this. Its a fancy word for the procedure to revise controlled documents through out a company. these documents could be specifications, safety related or just basic work procedures that a said company runs with.
What a lot of people don't understand or don't want to understand is if a company has special licenses they get audited by the company at least once a year so this management of change shows the history of the documents that gets revised.

what this thread tells me is "change management" means alot of different things in alot of places

Procedures from documenting, communicating and deploying change within an organization. Usually IT related. Basically it's documenting who did what so we all know who gets fired when something goes sideways. In a word:

This is correct. It's not bs in the engineering world. It's a constant problem for projects of all sizes and if handled incorrectly will result in scope creep and ultimately a blown budget and/or schedule. Which will basically destroy your client relationship. Which in some cases results in a loss of tens of millions of dollars of engineering business. So yeah upper management pays a lot of attention to that 'bs'.

Example: Carl routinely drank the last cup of coffee at 10:30 a.m. Carl never made a new pot after finishing one off. Middle management Mike was asked to resolve the situation by Corporate Chris. After several exhortations, middle management Mike realized that Carl did not give a damn about his pleas. Corporate Chris then decided that he needed a Change Manager from business school to make sure that no one wet themselves during this tumultuous period.

I've actually done a lot of this type of consulting, but it can mean different things in different contexts. It's used a lot in IT - basically managing the process of deploying new systems, platforms, apps, training, whatever. It's pretty important, and from what I remember, the whole idea sprung up decades ago when large-scale, C-level visibility projects were blowing budgets and losing huge amounts of money and clients because of scope creep and bad project management.
I've seen it used in manufacturing and healthcare (successfully) and other areas (not so successfully). Virtually all F-500 companies have some change management people on their payrolls now.

It's the politically correct term for the consultants a company brings in to recommend the downsizing needed but the current execs are to afraid to actually do.
