I like Vasque but boots are so subjective what's comfortable for me might be torture for someone else.
I've considered trying some custom made Russells. At ~$400.00 they're a reasonable price for made to order boots.

I just wore out a pair of Vasque Breeze boots
I've sworn off Vasque...I had me some when I was in college that were awesome. I bought some sundowners about 10 years ago, and within 18 months they were literally falling apart. Waterproofing failed around 1 year in...all around crappy Chinese boots. I wish they would go back to making them in Italy.

I got the goretex mid moabs
I swore off goretex in a boot. It's great if you don't overtop, but you will overtop, and then it takes forever for the inside to dry out.

I have Salomons and fricking love them. They are tough.

Going with your description of hiking boots for everyday wear and not backpacking boots that are meant for a load, I'd go with the Vasque Talus Trek Ultradry. Vibram sole, EVA midsole, and lightweight at 2.8 lbs for a good value at $149. If you want to spend some money, Cabela's Meindl "Perfekt" Light Hikers are extremely nice and rugged.

I'll second the Timberland boots, used for hiking, backpacking and working around the house.

Vasque Sundowner is a classic, and you can wear them for regular use as well.
If exclusively for hiking, I'd probably get something gore-tex

Vasque - comfortable and very sturdy.

I live on a mountainside.
Keen is my favorite pair.
Merrill's are made for very skinny feet.

I had Sundowners that literally fell apart on me in less than 2 years. I will never buy another pair of Chinese made Vasque boots. Sundowners (at least the pair that I bought) are gore-tex lined and are crap boots. Not like the old Italian Vasque...which were pretty much indestructible.

I didn't know they moved production to China. I had the Sundowner's in the 90's and they were made in Italy.

The hipsters have taken over hiking shoes.

I have both of these and use them for different applications. I've had the Ventilators for 4 years and they've been all over the Grand Canyon, Zion, Sedona, and used frequently as daily casual wear. I used the Mid's on a trip to the mountains where I was sure to encounter some wet crossings and snow/slush. Both are great choices.
I had Merrell Moab's that fell apart at the seams. One shoe actually gave out on a decline, and I had a pretty good spill.
I've had a pair of Vasque's for 10 years and also have a pair of Asolo's that I really like.

I like the Oboz Bridger. They gave me plenty of support and cushion for when I hiked in the Ozarks with a 40lb pack.

I do not do a lot of hiking but I wear these pretty much everyday. Comfy and have held up nicely

Altar Lone Peak 3 Mid Neoshell
Ugly as hell, but great for hiking. 0 drop and just enough cushioning.
