Orleans Parish is getting whiter and more Hispanic

In the latest hint of how demographics are shifting in New Orleans, new data from the Orleans Parish School Board show about 3,550 students entered kindergarten in New Orleans public schools in August, down 15 percent since 2014.
The percentage of African-American students also fell, declining to 73 percent from 83 percent five years ago
"What we’re seeing is the demographics of our city change," said Thomas Lambert, the school district's director of innovation and planning, during a meeting this month. "We now have access to student level data, so we’ve started being able to dig in and understand trends."

Gentrification
The people moving into the city and pushing the traditional residents out, aren't having kids until later in life (if at all).

Plus people aren’t trying to spend 2 hours on the road everyday and intercities are increasingly safe compared to the crack era.

I would be curious to see what those numbers are if not counting New Orleans east.

Great point! This would be an incredible statistic if you deduct New Orleans East from the stats.

I agree. New Orleans East needs to be partitioned off into its own city with its own neighborhood school system. Just by doing that, New Orleans proper would be a lot better off statistically, electorally, and financially.

Residents of the east were calling to break off from the city a few years ago bc they thought they were being treated unfairly, that kind of fizzled out though.
