It’s as easy as checking a box at the DMV when you renew your license. Everyone should opt in, and people should stop with the “they’ll let me die to harvest my organs” bullshite.

I’ve always felt that if you end up in very critical condition, they would be more likely to just let you die if they see you’re a donor. Especially if there is a great need for an organ you have.

Well that is just a wrong and ignorant viewpoint.

I am an organ donor. My dad had a kidney transplant. He was on the list for several years. Every time a kidney would come in, they would contact him and no matter what he had to hurry up and get to the hospital. He had gone in 5 or 6 times before there was finally a kidney that matched him.

Not sure why anyone would not become an organ donor. It's something everyone should consider.

I donated a part of my dad's eyes (I don't remember the exact part) that would allow two blind people to be able to see again.

I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to be an organ donor.

You still have to let your wishes known to your family though.

Cause even if it says on your driver's license you are an organ donor...and your next of kin don't know this and refuse....then you will not be an organ donor upon your death.

I figured this would trigger people. You do you and I’ll do me. That’s why they give you the option. Not everyone wants to be a donor.

I had a liver transplant 5 years ago and that was all they would tell me was the age. i'm very thankful but also knowing someone died is hard sometimes.

And I would imagine that brought you and your family some small bit of comfort while you grieved over your loss.

So yes, even if you aren't an organ donor your family can donate on your behalf. At least in FL. The nurses told us what was eligible for donation, I guess just based on medical history.

ETA: He may have been a donor, I don't know. I just know I was contacted to give consent.

Then make these wishes known to your loved ones. Have the hard conversations with them about what happens after you die and how you would want to die.

Having tough conversations now can save family members from so much anguish over trying to decide what their loved ones would have wanted in these end of life situations. It has caused families to fracture when one family member wants to do one thing and the other wants to do another.

I am an organ donor, but I'm not sure my liver and lungs will be much use to anyone.

The people working for state organ procurement agencies get intensive training on approaching family about donation. They are supposed to handle it with the utmost respect, but at the same time...convey the time limits involved in the situation.

I’m not triggered, I respect the fact you do not want to. You’re reasoning is just plain wrong.

I'm an organ donor and dont think twice about it.

But for some reason, donating my eyes specifically creeps me out. Couldn't tell you why either.

How do people come up with some of this shite?

"Is that person in critical condition an organ donor by any chance? If so, hold back on providing them with necessary care because we have some people waiting on some organs so the sooner they die the better"..

It's kind of sad to think that there are people who could have saved other people's lives, but because they believed this type of non-sense, they never became donors..

Consent from next of kin is usually always required before they will proceed. Next of kin has the final say.

I honestly can't remember the exact organization his eyes went to, but the people were very good. I had to answer like 15 minutes of medical history questions, but anytime she brought up cancer she would say "I know this is going to be a tough question, but..." so she obviously knew a little history.

But yes, time sensitive for sure.
