My three year old nephew received a liver transplant this week. He was born with a liver disease that was temporarily "fixed" with surgery as an infant, but the ultimate cure was a new liver.

I am humbled/saddened that it came as the result of another person's death, but I hope their family finds solace in that their loved one saved a precious boy and at least three others to my knowledge that received organs.

All this to say, consider being an organ donor if you currently aren't one and have that conversation with your family.

Agree completely! Thousands of folks lives are saved every year because of organ donations...unfortunately, many more pass away before an organ becomes available for them.

Put the designation on your driver's license when you renew and make your wishes known to your loved ones.

I can't possibly see a rational reason not to be an organ donor

I've always wondered, how much contact does the recipient and their family have with the donor's family? Is it something that either family has to request or is it just kind of immediately known?

I don't know how it is done now, but a relative of mine's organs were donated upon his death. There was no personal contact or even identification of either party, but we did get letters letting us know that each of the organs that were donated were successfully transplanted.

Soon, with gene editing, hopefully no one will have to count on the death of another human to receive a normal functioning organ.

Already have MIT and Harvard researchers editing pig DNA for human transplant capabilities.

For those who want to read on it.

Eta: Also remember not all donated organs are accepted easily or last a long time.

Very little. We were given an approximate age, but they wouldn't even tell the gender of the donor.

Wat?
Can you give me a hypothetical example?

Tijuana bathtub organ donations don't count.

Glad he got the transplant. Did anyone in the family get tested about donating a lobe from their liver if the time would have come and no transplant was available?

Could nobody in your family give up half a liver? No matches?

I signed up in 2010, got the call in July & donated in October.
Organ donor as well.

Glad everything worked out for your nephew OP.

Edit
2010 not 2018

I donated stem cells, not marrow

I’ve always felt that if you end up in very critical condition, they would be more likely to just let you die if they see you’re a donor. Especially if there is a great need for an organ you have.

Glad everything went well for the OP’s nephew though.

we certainly did. The parents should write a thank you letter to the family through lopa

We’ve received a couple letters and a card from people who received my dad’s organs in February and they mean so much to me

why would a doctor who has no vested interest in the organ recipient allow his own patient to die?

My wife gave her cousin a kidney several years ago. Strongest, most beautiful person I know. And yes they both went through the surgery with flying colors and still doing great. God is so good.
