Opioid Maker Insys files for bankruptcy after a $225 million settlement with Justice Dept.

This story has directly impacted me and my life because I am a cancer patient and I have been suffering bouts of severe pain that could not be controlled by weaker pain meds.
I have been on various pain medications for the past few years and about 6 months ago I was prescribed a 75 microgram fentanyl patch to wear 24/7 and for breakthrough pain, I was prescribed 400 micrograms subsys, an under the tongue spray, that provides fairly quick pain relief when the patch just is not enough.
For the past two weeks, between chemo treatments, I have been trying to get my prescription refilled and today my docs office called to tell me that they could no longer get the subsys spray due to the companies bankruptcy. This has left myself and probably countless others in similar circumstances in a real bind with no real good option for effective breakthrough pain relief. I will be talking to my Oncologist Monday to see what options we have going forward. I am currently not dealing with much pain but I know that I will have episodes of severe pain that are pretty much debilitating not to mention fricking miserable.
The govt from, local to federal, is pursuing these drug companies due to the "opioid crisis" and directly causing companies to fold or get out of the pain medicine business completely. This is another case of the government causing a problem where the people have to suffer. As most people know the opioid crisis may have begun with docs overprescribing opioids but not the biggest problem is the chinese fentanyl that is being used for street drugs and killing heroin addicts. I just know that I am pissed that I will have to literally suffer because of this shite.
What does the OT think of this development??

Sucks.
I have have to assume this is a reorganization. If that's the case, the lack of supply is puzzling.
If a liquidation, I suspect their patent will get sold off during the bankruptcy so there will be another player in the game at some point.
I know that doesnt help you now.

I was just saying to Mom over dinner with a cancer drug being scarce story on the news that the States better watch their asses on the opioid lawsuits as these pharma corps may say screw it and go out of business leaving all kinds of patients without all kinds of meds.
There's no laws mandating that companies produce products, much less affordable ones. Litigation costs are going to be passed on to the consumers. Guess who the consumers of medicines are? Yep, the sick and dying, and those who cannot live without the meds.
Remember to thank your government for their oh so sweet help in your health matters!!!

Have you tried weed? I'd imagine that you are physically dependent by now so you definitely need to stay on the patch but weed should stop the breakthrough pain
Posted on 10/18/19 at 6:17 pm to LSU2001
They are pressing fentanyl into pills now. Also cutting it into cocaine. It's not just heroin users it's killing.
It sucks, but are there seriously no other options for pain control?

Yes there are other options. I'd imagine after 6 months of fent use the OP is pretty hooked on it.

Sorry for what you are dealing with. I hope they can find alternatives to help you with your pain and your continued fight.

That sucks what about actiq ?

I have no doubt that I am "dependent" on it physically. My doc has told me many time not to just quit the patch because of the withdrawal it will cause. If and when the time comes, they will wean me off of this crap. The only good thing is that I don't have use the subsys daily. I will have an episode that lasts a few days usually right around my chemo treatment. (it causes the inflammation that causes the pain. ) I have chemo next week so I know it's coming.
I hope there are alternatives.
As far as weed goes, I am not impressed at all with the stuff the state is "allowing" it is simply a tincture that contains THC only I believe, in that case it may help but not do what medical weed is supposed to do.
I do have some marinol (prescribed, synthetic THC) so I will see if it helps with pain, it was prescribed to help me have some semblance of an appetite.

In such an event, I would imagine the govt can subsidize some company or manufacturing facility to produce generic meds of the same formula in such an event.
I am not knowledgeable but isnt there an older form morphine pills or something? Or is that stuff not powerful enough.

ETA I would look into marijuana and potentially even kratom in the case of the OP.

If you pick up dabs or shatter, you’re going to be in for a helluva night slumped into the couch. It’s cool

Cracker, Thanks for the Actiq name brand, I have never heard of it but it looks very, very similar to the subsys, I will be talking to my doc about this drug.
Thanks again

I’m sorry you’re going through that because I’ve witnessed firsthand when people that actually need help can’t get it because of this epidemic. I’m sure I’ll come off as some inconsiderate prick that has no compassion but sooner or later personal responsibility has to come into play.
Posted on 10/18/19 at 7:05 pm to gizmothepug
not inconsiderate to me at all gimothepug, I totally agree with you. If the fricking street junkies want to keep rolling the dice with that street fentanyl then all the power to them. If they frick around and OD then, IMHO, it's on them. I have a couple of doses of narcan at home "just in case" and I had to pay $100.00 per dose just to have it around. Some junkies, OD, get narcan from the cops or EMTs for free and do the same thing next week. I say personal responsibility should rule in these cases and if they die then again it's on them.

Is that the only effective pain med?
Posted on 10/18/19 at 7:20 pm to The Mick
I started on Morphine extended release tablets and sublingual liquid when I was first diagnosed. Once the radiation therapy relieved the pain caused by my rectal tumor pressing on some nerves, I was able to get off of that and just limp along for quite awhile on just tramadol and OTC pain meds like tylenol. About 1.5 years ago, I started to have these pain episodes associated with chemo treatments. After multiple visits to several different specialists they determined that what I was suffering was long term radiation damage. There really is no treatment other than pain management and cortisone suppositories. Doc put me on oral oxycodone tablets for about a year but it got to where I could double or even triple the dose and still get little relief. That's when the doc put me on the fentanyl patch and subsys spray and it has worked pretty well for the past six months. I don't know what is left out there for me but I am sure there are other options. The whole op was mainly about me being pissed off and wanting to hear the OTs view on govt. causing these kinds of issues for people who really need the meds for relief not for getting high.
I guess I should add that my cancer spread to my liver so stage IV at diagnosis in 2016. I will be on chemo for the rest of my life and dealing with this until the cancer finally kills me.
