Opelousas itself is poor and decrepit due to the lack of tax base. It also suffers from poorly run local government. This will get worse in my opinion. However, it is far from the poorest town in Louisiana.
What is saving Opelousas are the middle class living outside of the city still spending money there at the remaining businesses.

Lake Providence used to have martial law every weekend. It is a shithole. When the Mennonite Bakery burned down the Prov became worthless. Also Springhill/Cullen is pretty damn bad.
