"Almost 20 years into the 21st Century, it's time for Semmes and the other Confederates honored on the LSU campus to go. They have no place on the buildings and streets of a public university that claims to value diversity and inclusion."

Guess he didn't see the irony in this statement?

TBH I'm curious what the other buildings or roads were.

ETA: Apparently the only building on campus named after an African American is AP Tereaud Hall (I knew who he was but didn't realize it was the only one) BUT what really gets me in the article is he goes on to call out LSU for letting this building fall into disrepair and how APT's descendants must feel about that. To which I say, have you been into any of LSU's academic buildings? MANY of them (and apparently all named after some white people) are in disrepair. To single out that one in particular like LSU ignores it simply because it bares the name of a minority is ridiculous.

ETA2: Apparently Samuel Lockett of Lockett Hall was a confederate officer. That building may win for GOAT shithole and most despised building on LSU's campus (if something beats it out, it can only be Middleton). And Lockett is getting torn down anyway.

Your handle is Considerate as well, I have no problem with it. The Fighting Tigers were badass. Eventually someone will make a big deal about it and we probably capitulate and go to just Tigers.

Get an inventory of all buildings on campus. Assign a number to each. Building 1 becomes Multi Purpose Building 1. and so on.

If it appeases people I am fine with that. Fighting isn't that big of an identifier for the team.

And Kelly said the civil war was because of a lack of compromise.

Fourth, if we are going to name things after people, we do it the same way as everyone else: only if they give a bazillion dollars to LSU. And I’m not talking a relatively cheap gift like the Manship School took for its name. I’m talking $10 million minimum. Or pound sand. That’s what other universities do. No free naming of anything. Ever. That way if someone wonders... hey... how did that building get its name? The answer can be the same for everything... because that guy gave a metric frickton of money at LSU. You know, the only thing that REALLY matters here.

Someone really spent time doing this? Sorry I was too busy enjoying college to feign outrage over everything.

Maybe we could name one after William Tecumseh Sherman and give equal honor to the Union General, who served as LSU’s first President.

Jim Carville suggested this. Most of those buildings are named after guys who were important in the early days of LSU, who just so happened to be Confederates, which is why honoring Sherman thusly also makes sense. They did not get named due to their Confederate exploits, but due to the person's contributions to the school.

It's kinda hard to find black contributors w LSU connections, because they were not allowed to attend or teach at LSU until the late 1960s. Even now, except for athletes, the percentage is small, despite LSU really recruiting hard. Sad.

The new liberal catchphrase, I’ve noticed. “Diversity” alone wasn’t enough. It’s still just code for “no white guys allowed.”

I have a very simple solution to the Sherman problem...

the Sherman memorial tank!!!!

I do think Raphael Semmes street needs to me renamed simply because he commanded the CSS Alabama...

Robert Barrow would be a most appropriate name change for that street, the second Marine Corps Commandant with a LSU connection...LeJeune already has one of the Pentagon buildings named after him...

John Parker had nothing to do with LSU, other than being governor. So, let’s rename the cow palace the Shaqnasium.
