Go to New Zealand. Kayak through Abel Tasman National Park, hike Tongariro, raft through the glow worm caves of Waitomo. Whale watch in Kaikoura. Get day drunk in one of the several wine regions (we did both Marlborough and Martinborough). Visit the Te Papa museum and tour Parliament in the capital city of Wellington for your history fix.
I went there for 2.5 weeks last year for my honeymoon. It was incredible.

If you had only one chance for a ~2 week overseas vacation before you started having kids, where would you go? We're big into wine, hiking, outdoor scenery, and history, but most importantly want the experience of immersing ourselves in a different culture.
Taiwan. Small Island with very diverse regions. High Speed Rail system from one end of the country to the other. Have a great time in cities like Taipei, Kaoshiang, and Hualien. Plus plenty of smaller, less populated places with incredible scenery. Incredibly nice and accommodating people.
Great hiking, beaches, other outdoor activities. Plenty of history, museums, etc. Almost everyone speaks English (to varying degree). One of the cleanest and pollution free countries you will ever visit. However, you can visit the Night Markets and get the same type of smells as bourbon street -- minus the crime. Taipei is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 safest cities to visit by Travel magazine.
Absolutely fantastic food options. Even plenty of American chain restaurants for those times that you just want something you're used to having.

South of France or the Mediterranean (Nice, Monaco, Ventimiglia).

I've been to most of the places people are suggesting and the only real answer is New Zealand. You can thank me and ForeverLSU later. Nice pics he posted. It really looks like that. Glow worm caves were cool.

Bangkok could probably keep you busy for the entire 24 days, but you did say to give you things to stay clear of.
The area around the Grand Palace in Bangkok is pretty cool. It's where most of the Wat's/Palaces are in the city. That could keep you busy for a few days. Ride a water taxi, ride in a Tuk-Tuk. Stay away from any local that tries to convince you that all the government attractions are closed and he'll take you to a "friends" jewelry store.
Kanchanaburi is a small town not too far from Bangkok that has the old Siam capital ruins. It also has the real bridge of the river Kwai just north of it.
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are two smaller towns up country that give you a completely different view of the country.
There's a lot of stuff to do in the country. It just depends on what you're looking for. Of course Bangkok has the reputation for being seedy. But that's only really 3 areas of the city. The Nana, Soi Cowboy and Patpong are the areas that give the city that reputation.

Ireland is my destination of choice, but I have been to Croatia. Lots of bisexual women because the female to male ratio is like 3-1. You guys might enjoy that before having kids.

Sail the Sea of Tranquility. Then do some zero gravity hiking.
