ypically, yes. But Flu B fired up early this year. It was one of the earlier starts we've had since 2003-2004 I believe.

Maybe so, but it looks like that spiked the first week of January. It's not like it was in October.

It claims 6000 deaths where the sole cause of death was listed on certificate as flu
. Is this different from how they judge it in other years?

Again, this is raw data. There is no judgement or processing here.

Did you not even read the page?

People who have pneumonia now are tested for Covid-19. In the past, if they died, it would have been classified as a flu death.

The chart in the link separates pneumonia by itself and pneumonia with covid and separates influenza by itself.

Does anyone know the percentage of deaths that were people who were living in some kind of assisted living situation beforehand?

Approximately 1/3 of deaths are from nursing homes or other long term care facilities.

Those people make up about 0.5% of the total US population

Yea but if you really look at how they did the chart they take the number of the deaths attributed in the Covid and Pneumonia category then split them evenly among the two categories by themselves.

Open it back up!

ETA
As the posters previously said, the 6,000 is flu only deaths, not concurring reasons.

Also, covid is probably killing people that would have died of severe flu complications too, artificially driving that number down.

According to statistics it’s primarily in December-March.

Its all in how the medical facility coded the event/encounter.

So 79k and 57k is your definition of split evenly?

If they were inflating the numbers, wouldn't they go a little higher than 57k?

But you are still calling the worst flu season in 40 years average.

According to the CDC, whom you cited, the average death from flu between 2010 and 2017 was 34.5k

Why it stops at 2017? because it it’s a work in progress approximation because they spend years going over the data before finalizing.

February is by far the worst month for the flu, and January, February, and March are 3 if the top 4 worst months.

So you’re suggesting, what, that they are being classified as COVID deaths?

The table shows 2,691 flu deaths in February. It only shows 10 COVID deaths in February. You’re just misinterpreting the data.

That’s not at all what I’m saying, I’m saying that if you take the number of deaths in the category for covid and pneumonia, which is 24k and then you divide that by 2, which is 12k and subtract that from the only pneumonia and only covid categories, it gives you 42k and 66k, which add up to 108k and then add flu by itself which is 6k and it gives you 114k which is the total of flu, covid and pneumonia, the category on the far right of the chart.

There are more just pnuemonia deaths than just covid deaths.

And less with both than just one or the other.

And about 30k of these are long term care patients.

but yet they can give you an hour-by-hour running total of Covid-19 deaths.

The frick?

ETA: There is no “COVID only” or “pneumonia only” category. All “COVID and pneumonia” deaths are also “COVID deaths” and “pneumonia deaths”.

They aren’t.

The media and random Joe blow is.

The only real thing being communicated out now by the CDC is what’s the raw data coming in.

Most of the in season reporting is in terms of ILI/influenza like illness.
