Online dating protocol involving someone you already know...

If while perusing an online dating site you encounter a profile of someone you know (e.g. classmate, student in class, coworker, friend of a friend, drug dealer, business associate, fellow child abductor), do you contact that person via the site/app or do you just seek them out in-person?
It seems like the individual in question might feel embarrassed that someone they know is aware of their involvement in online dating (it's still taboo or frowned upon by some people). Therefore, perhaps it would be best to speak to them offline.
Does it change depending on the type of website or listed intentions (e.g. Match vs Craigslist, looking to get laid vs. actual dating)?

I wouldn't mention it to the person but I'd laugh at them and share the story with my friends.

send a smiley face, preferably a winking one

Whether I ask her out on the dating app or in real life, I'm PIIHB either way.

Here's what I do.
I contact them via FB or something and say "I have a secret!"
And then I tell them I saw them on whatever. And then we laugh.
The thing is, if you knew them already and knew they were single and were interested, why didn't you already try and do something with them?

I guess in the above scenario you would not be aware of their relationship status prior to the online discovery.

And I'm sure they are doing the same thing about you

Just send a message that simply says "hey"

I mean it's like seeing someone at the strip club. Neither of you should be there, but no one can judge. Just strike up a convo on the dating site.

"Student in class"
Best you leave this one alone.

Do you realize how many friends or acquaintances I encountered while drunk Tindering in college? You'd need new shoes just to run all of them down!

Happened across a co-workers wife on a dating site. Just left it alone. It's their business & I had no business getting involved.

Do you want to date this person?

This isn't an actual scenario in the present. But I have come across similar situations in the past.

I think I would just shoot them a note online to see if they are interested. If not, you can act like it never happened when you see them IRL. It is weird as shite seeing next door neighbors and people who work in your office building on those sites.

Act like you are ashamed of being on there as well.. Build a comfort zone.

I had to check the date on the OP, thought maybe I was reading a thread from 2005.

And the correct protocol is send her a dick pic.
