nice name calling

sorry i pointed out there are literally HUNDREDS of races, triatholons, marathons and century club-events every year on bicycles fully supported by police and the local laws that include highways.

but of course, that doesn't figure into your oh-so-smart view of how bicycles don't belong on the road.

eta next time you jump into a thread, it might not be a bad idea to have some remote knowledge of the subject matter first.

I think it would have lowered the likelihood considerably, but obviously no one could say for sure. Would you disagree?

Of course there could be an example or outlier, but this guy was completely negligent and did not see a group of people riding their bikes in the middle of the day. He didn't see them because he wasn't looking or concentrating on what he was doing. He was doing something else. He didn't not see them because they were only going 20 mph (IMO)

Had they been on something more noticeable (like a motorcycle) maybe he would have noticed them, but people don't look for cyclists.

People get hit in places all the time where the speed is less than 55 mph. Take Lakeshore drive in New Orleans where the speed limit is 25 mph in places.

What would have prevented this should not be on the

I don't like judging books by their cover, but I'm rather upset I gave this guy the benefit of the doubt when this first came out.

I don't either but usually works about 70-80% of the time. Especially when the books cover is 34 yrs old

the full story will come out. the surviving cyclists..the 13 year old boy...etc.

from personal experience i can tell you the driver of a car/cycle collision is almost NEVER charged as long as its not a hit-and-run despite the '3 foot law'. local club groups here in nashville fuss about this all the time..not because they want to see the driver fined..but because there's no point to have a '3 foot' law if its never enforced.

for him to be booked on charges this quickly leads me to believe this may have been malicious.

again..not jumping to conclusions just looking at the evidence released so far.

Yea, I agree with you there. For charges to come out this fast, something fishy definitely happened.

I would hope the guy wouldn't have decided to just take out some cyclists with his kid in the car, but you never know.

Wow. I wouldn't be able to think of I had just lost my spouse. I had her and their three kids in my thoughts all during my 4 hour training ride Saturday. I hate this situation for them.

Help us help them …

Premier Event Management is reaching out to you, our athlete community, and asking you to open your hearts and wallets in support of Frank Guinn, the Atlanta Firefighter and Ironman athlete killed Friday while cycling in training for this weekend’s Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans, and his brother-in-law Andrew Powell, who was seriously injured in the same incident. You can read more about the accident as covered by their hometown paper here.

Frank Guinn was a firefighter and EMT who served his community for 10 years. His wife, Kim, is an English teacher and drama coach at Lassiter High School in Atlanta, and a PhD student. They are parents to 7-year-old identical triplet girls. Because the girls were born 9 weeks early, Kim and the girls were ambassadors for the March of Dimes. Kim and Frank enjoyed running races and training for competitions together.

Frank’s brother-in-law, Andrew Powell, survived the accident and is currently in critical condition. He lost a lot of blood at the scene and has a broken pelvis, broken ankle and broken vertebrae in his neck. Guinn and Powell were biking the route to be taken in Sunday’s race when they were rear-ended by a vehicle. Sandra Powell, Andrew’s wife, teaches special needs children in Atlanta. Both are avid runners and met in a running club. Running together led to dating and marriage.

Funds for the families of both Guinn and Powell have been set up at crowfunding site GoFundMe.com; please give generously and keep the families of both men in your hearts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Bill Burke

Eff him I hope he rots in prison or worse. He took away a woman's husband and the father of three girls. He gets no mercy from me.

I'm still confused, what's the relationship between that and cyclists traveling in the same direction as traffic?

I guess I feel like if drivers don't look right when making a right turn, they aren't going to see the cyclist either way.
