My buddy that is smarter than 85%(probably more) of this board got convinced his bitcoin would be taken and multiplied by an account he thought was Elon musks. At the time, it was around $10,000 that he lost. Now it’s $105,000+.

I was told if I pay the hundreds of different taxes, the government will do wonderful things with them, using the money wisely.

Facebook ad led me to a business page. Scammers had copied the page of a legitimate marine dealership. Paid 50% up front ($1,200), only to discover a few days later my new motor wasn’t coming.

Scam page was spot on with the real dealership. Learned a valuable lesson.

I am ashamed to admit this, but I fell for the “my boss had some extra speakers accidentally shipped to him and said I could have them…” scam. Parking lot at the Calendars on Highland. I was only 18 or so but still. Such a blatantly obvious scam. They did sound pretty good though.

When someone told me a 14yo can’t be bound to a contract, I went to town!

The art on cruise ships. Got a little tipsy with the free champagne and bought a piece. Dumbass!

That sucks. In a similar vein, we had a supposed Dutch shipowner retain us to close on a vessel sale. I haven’t done anything maritime related since law school, but how hard could it be? Turns out they’d copied the URLs of real companies (seller, buyer and brokers) with very slight variations.

Fortunately we realized it before doing any work, but somehow it messed with our trust account. The scammer had initiated a wire or induced someone to do so. It has been a while. Fuzzy details.

But we are now super paranoid with wires and “clients” off the street. Especially off the streets of Amsterdam. As one should be.

I once bought a fake camcorder from a guy in a gas station parking lot. It was just a regular camera in a camcorder housing. I think I paid $50 for it.

Ashamed to admit that I fell for the SunPass scam a year or so ago. We usually take my wife’s SUV on roadtrips but this beach trip we had so much crap that we took my truck. You have to pass through the tolls and they usually send the bill in the mail a few weeks later. Well a few weeks go by and I get a text that saying you can pay your SunPass tolls online, “click here”. I figure they somehow got my number from DMV data or something. It’s Saturday morning and I’m a bit hungover so I’m thinking “ok, might as well pay this now”. Click the link, everything looked legit, put in my CC info and then got a message there was a processing error and the page went blank. I immediately knew it was a scam so I replaced my card and locked my credit.

Googled “SunPass scam” and found all sorts of news articles from Florida. SunPass claimed their systems weren’t compromised but to this day I don’t believe it. My wife didn’t get the text, just me. They must’ve had some way to know my truck was in FL, or it’s just a very odd coincidence.

A friend of mine was traveling south on I-49 and pulled into a gas station to fill up. He goes inside to pay and a guy standing next to a white van calls him over. He says he's headed to N.O. to sell stereo equipment and has a 1100.00-dollar stereo he will sell him for 400.00. My friend looks at the boxes holding the equipment and buys the stereo. Brings it home to find out its a 250.00-dollar unit. Now known for the infamous white van scam.

It’s not “worth” anything. It only has value if you sell it to another idiot.
