It really is strange time because people have two identities - their actual one and their social media one.

Whereas in the past it was important to protect your reputation and your good name, now you see people walking around in sweatpants while posting/erasing/re-taking/editing one photo of themselves eating spaghetti until it's absolutely perfect

On the flip side, standing behind a 40-50 year old at Best Buy or Cox who doesn't know what WiFi is is absolutely brutal. Of course when you make this point you get asked "yeah but can you balance a checkbook ledger!?"

You're wrong. Kids are socially retarded now a days.

They over share on social media and they can't function in normal society

From what I've seen on social media, its the adults who overshare, mostly millennial and GenX but but that's probably because a lot of us boomers are still a little tech shy.

Not sure about kids but I know tech is limiting adult interactions for sure. Was in a bar at ATL the other day and every single person was staring at their phones. I remember when people spoke to each other. I tried to make a comment about the Olympics on the TV to the guy next to me and he just looked up from his phone annoyed.

So how is technology, in any way, stunting social skills?

Umm, have you seen this current generation that is in college? They insist on being treated like children and being coddled from the outside world at large. They are very willing to sacrifice their freedom in the name of safety, especially from ideas. They have no interest in socializing with people who have a different opinion than they do. They have no idea how to hold a decent conversation or debate. They are certainly socially stunted.

Yesterday morning, I'd have thought this person above was a unicorn. What 40 y/o Gen X-er doesn't know what Wifi is?

Then yesterday, I (late Gen X) saw a guy talking on his phone using his horseshoe / cow-lead ring / necklace headphone thingy. I've seen people wearing these ugly arse things around for a while, but always figured they were headphones to listen to music from your phone, that you put them on like headphones. I found it hard to imagine caring about music that much that you needed to listen to it at a moment's notice all the time. I had no idea they were to talk and hear calls thru also, or that they had an earpiece.

I turned and blurted this comment out to the Baby Boomer gentleman behind me in line. He kind of smiled this pitying, bemused smile at me. Then again, it's entirely possible he couldn't hear me & had no idea what I was talking about.

How do you not?

"Talking" to people via devices isn't anywhere near the same thing as talking to people face to face. Not even a little bit. There's also a huge difference between social and social media.

social media opens the doors to a big pile of horse poop. Should be no such thing as a social media friend. Someone you never even met. How is that a friend. You don't even know what he/she is about. If you think anyone portrays their actual real life on the net good for you.

And the reason for a lot of that IMO is because they are largely protected from that kinda shite by mainly associating with the real world via their devices.

It's so easy to deal with things when you're removed and are behind a keyboard or on a device. Dealing with things in real life and in person is totally different, and it creates vital, life-changing social skills. Kids today are lacking those a good bit.

And of course it doesn't mean that all kids are social idiots and never have face to face social interactions. But I certainly don't see how anyone can think that it isn't trending downward.

Why are you generalizing? Believe it or not sjw's are the minority of this generation

I agree that the SJWs are a minority, but they are a very vocal one that tries to ruin everything. They are at least tenfold larger then they were even 10 years ago. I don't like that trend at all and seems that once these people achieve any sort of power, they will use it to wipe away freedoms. I want to kill this infant when it's in the crib, not wait for it to grow up before it can be stopped.
