One of the most common misconceptions- kids don't talk face to face anymore
Posted by Peepdip on 8/31/16 at 8:32 pm728
I hear people saying this all the time, on this board especially. The logic is that because kids have the technology to talk to other people on there phones at all times that they are losing the ability to communicate face to face. Usually their reasoning is "I went out to eat with my family, and my granddaughter was looking at her phone the whole time".
I think this is a huge misconception, and that kids are developing social skills at a faster rate than they were pre- internet.
Sure there are a select few (probably autistic) kids who spend most of their time playing video games and never go outside, but most kids still love playing outside, that's something thats never going to change. The only difference is when they go home, they can still communicate with other kids via instagram, facebook, skype, ext. when they go home.
School is where most people develop their social skills, its not like kids don't go to school anymore.
Social media is opening doors to meet more people than ever before. Highschoolers and college kids can have sex at will through Tinder, meeting people they never would have met in the first place. People are no longer limited to only meeting other people who they go to school or work with. So how is technology, in any way, stunting social skills?

IDGAF what you say, when we are at a family gathering and I see all my family including my little cousins just staring at their phones the whole time, it irritates me... And I'm not even 30 yet.... And it's not like we are all sitting around drinking tea... We could all be hanging out and drinking beer and these guys (adults too) stay on their phone the whole time
Eta: I get your point, but some people really take it to the extreme... My favorite part is when they need to charge their iPhones but they won't let it leave their side so they plug it in and sit 2 feet next to the wall for an hour

My dad is on his phone at least as much as me if not more.
I just hired an intern who not only couldn't communicate, but wrote an address on an envelope on one line. Instead of being embarrassed he said "When would I ever send out mail? Why should I know how to address an envelope, I use email?" He was completely oblivious to the fact that the envelope had a return address in the proper format and then made excuses.

Who is really at fault here?

You are missing the point. Yes people are on their phones too much these days, but it is not direcly negativily influencing the actual ability to communicate with other people.
Technology is becoming too much of a crutch for boredom, but the actual ABILITY to speak to one another is still there, it's just a matter of using it.

Call me old school if you want, but it's rude as hell to be face down in your phone when you have company

THIS
frick, ive been world traveling with my cousins and all they do is post shite on social media. They got problems. Bars are the worst place
I didn't feel strongly one way or another on this until fairly recently when I realized that all of my student interns had the following characteristics:
(a) lurking outside of my door in the hallway until I acknowledged them and initiated conversation; and
(b) not knowing how to end a conversation.
The will literally do (a), then get invited in and ask their question. I respond and they continue to sit there. Doesn't matter if it is work-oriented or social conversation, they do not know how to initiate or conclude it in person. I blame this entirely on texting.
Yes they interact in person with people, but rarely people who they don't know very well. It is noticeably bad.

A lot of the time me and my girl friend will sit in silence for an hour or two while I read. Are books making me socially retarded?
My point is, people rely on there phones as a form of entertainent, and I can see how that is bad, but I dont think it is directly hindering their ability to speak to people.
