I'm going with the sliding mitten for baseball. I know MLB players use it, but man idk.

My son watched Pokemon as a kid and had cards. Played lots of video games. Was not an athlete. Watched lots of anime. He just returned from Gencon gamers conference in Indianapolis.
He graduated from Lsu. Has a masters from Arkansas. Has a good job and is happily married and at 27 years old.
Think he'll come out before or after hitting 30?

Shouldn’t kids today learn how to socialize too?

quote:Yes of course. They should learn how to be comfortable alone with their own thoughts though. I think the concern is having kids feel the panic of sitting with their own thoughts and feeling the need to instantly distract themselves.

Louis CK had a great bit about this on Conan:

Just remember whenever he goes to a friends house he is partaking of whatever media you banned.

This is stupid but never allow them to be a Cowboys fan. Both my kids watch sports with me and I’ve slowly sewn the poison with them on hating the Cowboys despite living in DFW. My wife lost that battle before she ever realized it started. The son is a straight up Saints fan and the daughter is a chiefs fan because of Taylor Swift.
About a year ago she noticed the kids never asked to watch the cowboys on tv. That is probably been our biggest fight over the past few years.

The cowboys are inevitable. Despite accomplishing nothing for many decades, we must all suffer their mediocrity in prime time for 2/3rds of the season.
Though I’m not sure steering your son towards one of the worst-run franchises in professional sports is a great alternative either.

Restrictions will be placed on my girls (7 and 5) when the time comes for phones and or social media.
No phones til 16, no unmonitored social media until 18. Honestly probably not even going to allow that til 16. Too much awful shite happens to kids via social media

Use an ipad or phone in a restaurant. Parents who allow this are weak as hell and an embarrassment.
If your kids can't sit through a meal and talk with you, stay at the house and continue raising zombies.

Anime. If Pokemon is anime, none of that crap either.
Well, your kid doesn’t need to become an anime freak. You’re missing out on some good shite to introduce to your kid, specifically with Hayao Miyazaki’s filmography. This is a hell of a lot better than Cocomelon. My Neighbor Totoro is pretty much concentrated joy and wonderful for kids:

Also South Park’s unbelievably funny parody of it:

And as for my actual answer, smart phones and social media obviously. I will gift them a smartphone on their 18th birthday or whatever the trendy equivalent thing is at that time. 17 and under though, frick no, they’re never getting that.

Reminds me of the (very brief) pearl clutching about the Harry Potter books 20-25 years ago.
The funny part about that one is that Harry Potter turned out in the end to be Christian literature in the same vein as Narnia, it’s just JKR didn’t want to say that because it’d spoil the ending of the novels.
Once they were all released, she mocked the fundamentalists that if they had actually read her books and known what they were about that they could have easily guessed the ending of it.
You didn’t hear shite from the fundamentalists from the week the Deathly Hallows was released forward since they felt like idiots at the end.

My answer is daycare.
Great answer. We made the decision early on that we would go to one income once we started having kids so that my wife could be a stay at home mom. It was tough at times and we had to forgo some things but I wouldn’t go back and change it for anything. Once both had started school my wife went back to work part time, mainly because she just missed being around other adults but she was still able to get them after school so they didn’t have to go to daycare.
Both of my now grown kids are married and none of them wanted to make the sacrifices necessary to have a stay at home parent. Lot harder to do in this economy. My grandkids still don’t go to daycare. Three days a week they go to a Mother’s Day out program at our local church. It’s only 9-2. My wife picks them up and keeps them until the kids get off work. Grandkids get to socialize with other children and my wife gets plenty of time to spoil them without it just overloading her. Great balance. The church also had a preschool program that they will eventually move into once old enough.

Old people (I'm older than you) always bitch about media. Anime has been around forever, it's the same as the Punisher comics I bought in the 80s, just more complicated and detailed.
But what actually matters? Wearing AirPods while talking to people. GTFO with that. Tons of kids do that shite now, and it is disrespectful as all hell. You're focused on something that doesn't involve interaction with other people. shite like not lying, not being late, etc., are far more impactful. But go all PMRC on Anime. I'm not a consumer of it, either.

My argument is why is anime in any way really worse than western animation? Are you going to tell me that Pokemon is worse than Cocomelon? Pokemon is retarded on its own accord, but there’s a ton of shitty western animation. It’s a wash at best and if anything I think anime may be slightly superior. You’re not going to see this filth in children’s anime for instance:
