Recent Starkville Academy graduate was flying a Civil Air Patrol C-172 and attempted an emergency landing on Ole Miss golf course after performing a touch-and-go at nearby UOX airport.

Only 18 years old with a big future ahead of her.

I've played the Ole Miss golf course. The runway to the tiny airport runs parallel to one of the holes and isn't more than a few hundred feet away.

I'm saddened to read. I'm terribly sorry, prayers lifted.

The other links at the bottom of this terrible story aren’t much better. Memphis seems like a nice place this time of year.

Take your wife and kids to the river to watch fireworks, instead this happens LINK

So sorry to read this about this beautiful young woman. I wonder what kind of mechanical failure the plane experienced. C-172s are fairly stout airplanes.

Played the course earlier this morning.. they had hole 16 and 17 ( the hole she crashed on) roped off for the investigation

The plane looked from my vantage point, unharmed .. you wouldn’t know it was on fire . She crashed it into a hill with trees around it.. and it appeared she was going slow as the plane looked intact and not smushed .

She was maybe a few hundred yards from the runway... didn’t quite make it.

She was practicing touch and go’s. I haven’t heard if it happened when returning to do another or if happened during touch and go and affected take off.

Second that.

You have to think it’s power loss or prop failure.

ETA, based on photo, she came in wings level. Looks like the trees took off the wings, rupturing the fuel tanks. So mode of failure looks like loss of thrust.

So I’m guessing she took off on 09, turned onto left downwind, lost power, and felt she would run out of runway trying to put it down on 27, so went straight in on the golf course.

That’s the wildest of WAGs.
