The trucking industry is struggling right now.

I work in transportation for a fortune 20 retailer. We are the shipper of choice for almost everyone. In our case, we have more volume than even we can handle, and there is simply not enough capacity to haul it. A lot of our asset-based partners are struggling big time because they invested in a bunch of brand new trucks but don’t have the men to operate them - or poor planning results in a lack of capacity in a certain region.

Brokers charge a premium but I feel like they are doing a little better.

The failures by our truck carrier partners have led us to seek out rail as an alternative from whichever supplier origins are rail-served. Rail is much cheaper and almost as reliable depending on the railroad. (If it’s UP not so much - they suck).

Currently ongoing - Rumor broke out Friday night that a major trucking company was going under. Celadon employs over 3,000 truck drivers and haul freight in all of North America. When rumor broke out, their fuel credit company cut off their fuel cards to stop the company from ringing up more debt - thus stranding all of the truck drivers all over the continent. The company has no liability to get the drivers home, but the drivers are responsible for the freight in their trailer and the equipment to the company. The company officially announced this morning that they are filing chapter 11 and all loads are to be delivered, but most drivers still don't have their fuel cards and empty promises to be paid for delivering the freight.

This is the largest trucking company to go under in the history of the industry - mostly due to the cheap freight rates they have been hauling along with a $40m+ fine from the feds for fraudulent profit reporting which has landed indictments for their 2 executives. An absolute mess for the truckload industry right now after 2 mid size carriers dropped earlier this year - Falcon and N.E.M.F.

The folks who don't have transportation home are absolutely effed right now - especially the folks living paycheck to paycheck. There are companies offering to get them rides home in return for employment, and a lot of drivers are chipping in to help these people get bus tickets - I saw one dude that looked nearly suicidal Sunday morning in Virginia. All the guys sitting at the counter chipped in to get him breakfast and a ticket home from a bus depot further down the road.

TL;DR - Major trucking company shut down & turned off fuel cards, drivers are stranded all over the country.

So the individual drivers are responsible for the value of their loads? jesus that is fricked up in this situation.

Not quite that easy. The drivers are responsible for the load as soon as they sign for it. If they refuse to deliver it then the load would be reported stolen.

Absolutely hate it for the drivers. Luckily for them there is an extreme shortage of drivers in this country so if they can get out of this mess they won’t be out of work long.

Deliver the load and keep the tractor til the company pays you

This sounds like everyone was chasing the bottom on pricing and along with poor management Celedon found it. The work is there, charge more until people find other ways. I have no sympathy for people bidding too low. I have a little sympathy for those in industries where there is not enough work.

That's the shippers property, and that's a federal crime if caught.
Right, but they can't actually get in trouble for just abandoning it though, can they?

If the company has filed and won't pay the drivers' for fuel, I can't see how it's the the drivers' responsibility to pay to have the freight delivered.

With everyone ordering from places like Amazon we will need less and less trucks. E commerce is the future and these companies and drivers need to start planning now before they’re all forced out.

I can charge a price for a product all I want, but, if someone comes in and offers the exact same service for a lower price, which one would you choose?

Yes poor management played a role in this but as someone said earlier trucking insurance is absolutely astronomical right now.

I just quoted a single rig with a 300 mile radius, 3 years loss free, with loss runs, and the pricing was 50K a year.

Rail is great if you have good local truckers at origin and destination.

Are we no longer buying stuff?

E commerce still requires logistics. They're not manufacturing your blue jeans and big screen TV in your living room.

True - but in our case, all of our distribution centers that I manage the freight for are rail-served, so there is no need for using origin reloads (which are a PITA in the first place and almost render the use of rail a waste of effort).

Trump broke them.

No, the mountain of new regulations imposed by that worthless fricking Kenyan and his corrupt band of thieves broke the trucking industry.

Starting with the ELD (Electronic Logging Device) bullshite which cost trucking companies thousand$ per truck to equip and maintain.
