The attitudes and behavior of the first group, the argument goes, are no different from what's been prevalent throughout human history, and remains prevalent among most people. Go to any rural place in Afghanistan, or India, or even Guatemala and act like Emmett Till, and you'll end up like Emmett Till- minus the fancy historical marker.
The urges that lead to people like Till getting the crap beat out of them are atavistic, but also have an evolutionary basis.
Women have a natural tendency toward exogamy, a primal want to absorb the genetically different and thus strengthen the genetic stock. Left to their own devices, they will mate with any lantern-jawed foreigner, whether conqueror or slave. The genes of their fathers and brothers will be excluded (to the extent that their fathers and brothers aren't invading foreign lands and vaginas themselves, in which case they'll have less energy for beating up the Emmett Tills of the world).
In any case, he does not deserve a sign for convincing people to finally stop being mean and share their sisters with the lantern-jawed heroes of foreign lands... because he didn't.
