Wife and I tried for like 2 years to have a child. Went and did all the test. She is good, I'm good. It just never happened. So we decided that we will have the best of everything. Best cars, best vacations, spoil our nieces and nephews, etc.

It hurt for alittle while, but as I see what the world is coming to and the things young kids have to deal with and the strain it puts on the parents (we have alot of friends with kids and nieces/nephews) I'm freaking glad we don't have children. I couldn't imagine trying to raise a kid in this world.

Not to mention having disposable income and the ability to jump up and take a trip whenever and where ever we want is so nice. Plus I can relax in the afternoons and don't have to worry about baths, homework, talking back, etc.

Find your local recreation dept and start coaching.

We are short every year with rec coaches.

It's awesome. I do basketball and baseball. They need umpires and refs.

When my kids are grown and gone i'll still volunteer.

There are never enough.

Pessimist much brah?

You’re intellectually lazy throwing out that stereotype.

I’m 3 for 3 on having kids folks would kill to have. (Subtle brag)

I feel sorry for them. What an incredibly lonely existence.

My kids are awesome and being a dad is something I've wanted to be since I was a kid.

.......That being said my wife and I joke about how much money we'd have if we didn't have kids.

If that was the life we chose, which some of my friends have, then live it up and eat at awesome places. Travel places spur of the moment.

While I sympathize with your situation, this is so much hyperbole. Like raising kids today is worse than any other time in the history. Clearly you’re not choosing to not have kids but there’s no big deal with raising kids today. Unless you’re that obsessed with social media and think everything there is true to life.

Get a grip.

I'm sorry but that's just my opinion. I see my sister dealing with a son that gets bullied relentlessly at school to the point where he is depressed all the time and cries when he has to go to school. I also see a friend of mine with a daughter that has issues sending "questionable" stuff with her phone to boys in her class. Another friend that is dealing with a son that thinks he may be gay and exploring that (and thats fine but I get to hear stories about how he is bullied and ridiculed daily). There are a host of other issues I see friends and family dealing with and I'm glad that I don't have to go through those issues. Not after seeing the stress its put on some of my friends and family members lives and marriages. The crap that is coming out of the schools nowadays, teachers sexually abusing children (three cases close to where I live just happened), school shootings, kids beating up teachers... there is alot of crap out there that I'm glad I don't have to deal with. I'm assuming parents back in the day had to deal with some if not most of that, but there are alot of issues that are unique to the times we are living in, and if you can't see that then you may not be in tune with what's going on.
Call me selfish if you want, but for me not having children was a blessing in disguise.

And I do have a grip..... on my golf clubs when I take my next golfing excursion.

I am in a similar spot and sometimes wonder if eventually it will feel hollow. Having kids wouldn't guarantee anything but seems like a special and beautiful part of life to miss out on. If I can stay in good enough shape to climb and ski I think I will live a fulfilling and happy existence either way

I also think living in a large and more liberal area helps where people aren't as tied to more traditional values. I have plenty of friends who will never have kids and do things like live in vans/RVs for stretches to travel and surf, climb, or ski. If I was in the south where seemingly everyone is coupled up and having kids it would have an adverse effect on my mental health

Parenting is not everyone's journey. You can still find a lot of ways to help youth and people who need your time.

to me it is more about a modern hedonistic lifestyle whether that is non-monogamy, being where i want when i want, early retirement, and just the general lack of desire to settle down and do more traditional things. if it wasn't my own kids, i don't really have the urge to make an impact within that realm, but that could change over time i suppose

So anecdotally three kids that you know that are having issues that in some form or another have existed throughout time plus you watch the news and see bad stories and that forms your entire opinion.

I’m not for or against people having kids but I’m just calling out that “today’s world is so bad” as a bs cop-out reason not to.

Yeah my friend, I'm basing my whole opinion on three kids.

My point is if we (the global we) stopped having kids because of every perceived bad thing going on, the world would die out.

And again, I’m not questioning having or not having kids, just noting that this is a dumb reason not to.

in my opinion, this is the single most asinine reason i hear people state for not having kids, and it's fairly common where i live

Link about Jim O’Connor

Even though I knew this story and was familiar with the video, it’s still touching.

I knew a man like that. Rough exterior and a demeanor that would make a Drill Sergeant stand at attention, but totally transformed with a baby in his arms. Really, eye opening.
