I get the sentiment about killing just for fun, but what about the sport of it and the fruits the animal provides?

I hunt and fish because it's a sport, its a vice and a release, it provides food.

Of course "you cant eat the horns" blah blah blah......

But if kill it or catch it I'll cook and eat it or I'll give it away.

I donate processed game to the food bank at least once or twice a year.

Do the people ITT not eat meat? or Fish?

Did yall also quit fishing, or frogging?

Snakes I dont really care about....I usually just leave them alone....possums, I'll leave them alone....armadillos are dead to me

I can and will never be able to kill a cat or a dog unless its a coyote or a nasty arse hog/bobcat

I'm not as bloodthirsty as I was as a kid/young man. But I'm much more deadly and quick to kill without second guessing myself now. I just don't do it as often.

I was brought up in the 70's and 80's hunting every weekend and it was pounded into me that dead is better than injured. If you have to take a life, you owe it to them to do it as fast and humanely as possible. Hurts my soul to wound something so I simply don't wound things anymore. Never did much but I simply don't take shots now that aren't going to end in a swift death.

I've never hunted & never wanted to -- AMA

Partly I'm repelled by killing, & partly I see no point in killing for the sake of killing.

But I am not a total hypocrite. I eat meat. But I'm not campaigning to outlaw hunting. I live my life & let hunters live theirs.

For some reason this reads like an Oweo post to me.

"I have a friend who told me about the time he went hunting and..." plus six long paragraphs

I'm now 71 and when younger I did hunt a pretty good bit, mostly small game including rabbits, squirrels, ducks and the occasional hog.

I've always lived in an urban area, so hunting required a bit of travel and as more and more of the previously open land got snatched up and posted, it took longer and farther to get to hunting areas.

That said, I gave a 12 gauge Remington 870 with a ventilator rib and a .22 Marlin Rifle to a very good friend of mine who moved to rural Mississippi years ago and hunts regularly.

I've never had an interest in hunting clubs with all the dues, licensing, cost of a good rifle, etc. to go deer hunting.

Some friends still hunt and they are gracious enough to toss me a nice deer roast or some ducks from time to time and that is enough for me.

We are going on a couple of generations of people now that aren’t affected by pests like they were in the old days when people had to kill to supplement their food supply or protect crops they depended on for their livelihood. I guarantee you that if coons started chewing all the internet cables people would exterminate them with fury.
Also we have several generations that have been alienated from the land. They think food comes from the grocery store.

This is really a pretty common point of view. At least by you level headed queers.

100% this. I just turned 52. Still love to duck hunt and deer hunt but killing is just secondary now. It has gotten a little comical in my group that we spend all this money on hunting ducks and putting in the time and effort to go and then we literally try to give ducks away to each other after the hunt. With that being said, I make a concentrated effort to cook any ducks that I bring home asap. I almost hate to even think about freezing them so I don't. Deer on the other hand, well that is a different story but at this point in my life, I pretty much only shoot does.

I have noticed that older people are less likely to watch UFC or boxing.

Is it too violent of a sport?

Not that I'm old per se, but I have never watched UFC. I guess it just became popular later on to me.

I used to love boxing, but there are no great heavyweights anymore.

I'd also like to add that every year we get alligator tags and fill our tags, and get paid per foot and the alligator meat and hides dont go to waste

We also have licenses to kill nutria and get paid $6 per tail

Don’t really have a desire to hunt or shoot anything unless its a snake.

I will fish all day though. But I play by the rules. I’ve seen folks step on an 11.5 inch speck or 15.5 inch red to throw it in the ice chest. If it ain’t big enough, then its going back

There are five stages a hunter goes through.

1) Shooter Stage
2) Limiting Out Stage
3) Trophy Stage
4) Method Stage
5) Sportsman Stage.....were the emphasis is placed on the total hunting experience.

And yes, the older I've become the less I care about killing.

There is no reason for everyone in the boat to catch 25 12” specs or 5 16” redfish

15 trout and 3 redfish is plenty for one person.

I don’t like to freeze fish if I don’t have to.

Will be 75 in March, God-willing. Never was a hunter but used to bb and pellet gun shoot birds, lizards, bats. Looking back, my conscience kind of aches for the needless suffering and loss I carelessly caused those beautiful little creatures. Stopped that decades ago. I feel sick to my stomach now if a crazy squirrel runs across the road in front of my car, and splat.
Used to love fishing. But lost that feeling in my 40s. Over-fishing seems bad, and catch and release is just cruel. A lot of those caught and released are pretty injured and probably die or attract predators who finish them off.
I would, however, fish to eat. Not sure about hunting. Am a carnivore. A super market predator.
