Everyone smoked everywhere and it never bothered me. Oh and I never smoked.

I got on a crowded elevator in about 1993, and some old fart was smoking a cigar.

Major wide spread, everywhere. When I took classes at UNO in the 70's, students could smoke in the classrooms. Have you watched Mad Men on Netflix?

I started smoking when I got orders to Nam (1967). Yup, you got 4 cigarettes in a pack of C-rations. I'd say 80-90% of people smoked. Probably 98% of servicemen in Viet Nam. Only time we couldn't smoke was on an ambush. Working in an internal medicine clinic, in the Navy, I remember walking into a a doctor's office while he was talking to a patient. He was giving the patient hell and told him " You've got to stop smoking for your health!" The patient walked out the door and the doctor opened a desk draw and pulled out a pack of Salem's and lit one up.
It started in Basic Training. If you smoked, you would get smoke breaks. If you didn't smoke, no breaks.
I wasn't around then, this is what I've been told.

Playing youth baseball back in the 70s...most coaches would smoke coaching bases. Umpires would light up between innings. Football coach chain smoked cigars....every now and again would accidentally burn a kid as he demonstrated blocking or tackling technique. Lots more smoking back then.

I was in some small city in Kentucky between Bowling Green and Louisville yesterday and stopped at this local restaurant for lunch and they had a smoking section.
I don't smoke, but thought that was great. Took me back.

People keep talking about smoking being allowed in restaurants in 90s. It's only been last 6-7 years since they banned it in restaurants.
Eta: guess it was more like 9 years ago

I am a casual smoker (about two packs a week) and have been since I was eighteen. It is fascinating to me how overwhelming the perception against smoking has been, even in my lifetime, even if I don't really remember public smoking that well.
I am far from someone who is upset by this, I smoke outside and away from people, but I think it's funny that the dangers of secondhand smoke were known for a good while and public smoking didn't really bother people until laws were actually put into place.
Now people will condescendingly cough when they see smoke away from them.

That pisses me off to no avail. I'm kinda like you, I only smoke every so often (if I go to a bar I'll pick up a pack) but the people that cough when you are smoking are assholes.

Anyone remember the old WWL top of the hour ID?
"Radio 87...WWL New Orleans...it's 5 o'clock...time to light up and enjoy a King Edward Cigar"
