Old money often looks down on new money, and portrays new money as lacking class or sophistication. I suppose it is because they did not have the 'fancy' upbringing enjoyed by the typically spoiled old money kids.

In reality, new money should be preferred and honored by society. They are producers who actually built something or had an original idea. They are the hard workers that improve the economy.

It is especially ironic since the only reason the old money families exist is that, at some point, someone in their line actually made an impact. The grandfather they honor in the oil paintings on the wall of their second solarium has far more in common with the new money entrepreneur than he does with his spoiled, worthless great grandchildren.

New money is usually drug dealers, athletes, or a blue collar business.

Not my rules, just putting it out there.

*PS - I agree with you however.

Because people who consider themselves 'old money' still need some reason to look down on others.

I think most money in the US is "new money".....earned within the last 2 -3 generations.

I prefer old money. New money is too crisp and feels fake in your hand.

Lottery...like being born into the right family? Like President Trump, his kids, and Jared Kushner?

It's not the money that is preferred, it's the upbringing and by virtue of that the class and sophistication of the individual. It would be like if someone from the hood made it big and moved into your manicured/gated community. They may have money, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are on the same level as everyone else as far as class.

Not saying it's right, but that's the reason.
