I don’t like it. I do think we need some type of controls because there are so many chasers its causing rush hour type traffic and dangerous conditions for chasers to exit quickly as storms change directions. But making it tied to legacy news or universities is not the answer.

I say require a license for anyone and a fee big enough to have some enforcement capabilities using the fees to fund. And maybe require a magnetic light to place on top of vehicle that is unique to chasing, to ID licensed chasers. And a required class (could do online) to teach chasing safety.

Right now its wild west and someone is going to get killed or delay good chasers from getting timely info to public.

Is it the same price to get chased by the tornado?

The reasons I am not in favor of this bill are as follows:

1. Seems to define a professional storm chaser as one who works with legacy media or university. Most professional storm chasers are streamers through social media or work with radar/weather apps not with the FCC.

2. No limit on the road closures. They could, in theory, close off a whole section of Oklahoma and only make it accessible by licensed storm chasers.

3. Many many Oklahomans get their severe weather information from non-legacy media storm chasers. We reach orders of magnitude more Oklahomans than many local news broadcasts.

4. This is step one toward broader regulation.

"I'm not storm chasing. I'm just looking at the sky."

Tying it to TV or university affiliation is stupid and likely not enforceable, at least not realistically.

For perspective, legacy media meteorologists have 17k, 53k, and 115k followers on X. Reed alone has 850k.
I’ve had many conversations with Rep @scottok16. He’s a good and reasonable guy and I would bet he will be willing to sit down with you and come up with a solution.

Yes as the longest running professional storm chaser I could be of help in crafting a bill. Thank you, Scott.

This is not about just looking, this is chasers who are given latitude with all police on speeding and other normally illegal maneuvers.

Someday a rookie chaser is going to block a dirt road and trap 50 other chasers and a tornado is going to wipe them out.

I agree about too much government. We need to fond a middle ground though because its an industry now.

The chasing community is partially, maybe mostly, to blame for this. Every Tom and hairy dick with a phone and a car thinks they're a storm chaser now. Too many of them lack the knowledge or experience to do it safely. They are their own worst enemy.

I don't like it but whatever. Some nerd Democrat from OKC introduced the bill and I don't see how it could be enforced outside of populated areas like OKC.

Ain't no one getting cited or arrested for some ahit like that where I live.

That’s BS.

Fees to follow weather?

If someone want to risk things and put themselves in danger then that’s on them

But… hasn’t happened. A meteorite could kill you sitting at a stoplight. If you’re scared of tornado deaths, get the hell out of tornado alley.

Oh, I agree. It is just that with the trends over the past few years, and with the community showing no desire to change, something was going to happen. That's how you get a bullshite bill like this.

It really isn't puzzling to me.

Oklahoma has way to many Bible thumper here. They like to tell people what to do too much.

Good thing I live in rural Oklahoma where it's basically the Wild West.
