During boom times, do any of these companies take their profits and invest them elsewhere

Heres the trick... The companies WILL make sure they keep making money... When Gas was at 3.50 to 3.80 A gallon these companies made massive amounts of money and will make sure they will keep it.. That's why the layoffs... In the end these companies do really care about what happens to their workers.......

Just wait until renewable energy is commercially viable on a larger scale.

It's very sad. I feel for the folks in SLa. Hopefully things will pick up again soon.

True, but I don't see oil companies bidding on your gas business every 3 years and laying off thousands because another company gave you a 3 percent lower price.

Drop in U.S. production? For the past 4-5 years the production has been huge here and in Canada.

Look at the last six months, US production is experiencing its largest percentage drop in production since the 80s.

Not sure where you get that from but production is still higher than the 80's. LINK

So, I'm not buying this huge drop in production lately.

Demand is way higher than the 80s, too. We are producing more than in the 80s but are currently in decline. The shake boom has peaked.

I really don't care what you buy, it's fact.

Production is off it's highs slightly. That's the fact.

The downward trend has only just started. More will come throughout 2016.

The U.S. is expected to produce 9.2 mb/d on average in 2015, which will drop to just 8.8 mb/c in 2016. Both of those figures are 0.1 mb/d lower than last month's projection.

I know. I linked the same info, different graph.

Production is still high here. Slightly off its highs, but still higher than mid-80's so this so-called 6 month percentage drop means little.

I'm out of this. I can't debate someone who thinks 2015's hydrocarbon demand is the same as in the 80s.

He said the exact opposite actually.

No you can't back up your assertion.

I proved that point is irrelevant and actually wrong. No debating that. Bye.

First Cut goes full retard when he is arguing things I have noticed. You should have read the building permit thread. Dude thinks he knows more than anyone else but can't back up his arguments when challenged. It's sort of funny to watch.

Production isn't the huge driver in the layoffs here though, it's the drilling side of the business, at least currently.

Yes the writing was on the wall, knew this was coming just didnt think it would get this bad and stay down for as long as it probably will.

BushM If I get laid off and Beam and I dont say frick it and just start farming I will be giving you a call.

For all the idiots in here ranting and raving about "unskilled labor" oilfield guys being over paid. They are paid because they do jobs and make sacrifices that others wont. You spend half your life on what is basically a floating bomb working at least 12 hours a day missing your family and everything that goes with it. Not only is there the chance of being blown to pieces but damn near everything out here can crush you or kill you in one way or another. Just within the last 6 hours the poor bastards on the drill floor a couple hundred or so feet from me have worked though sideways winds and rain while battling an unexpected gas surge and carrying out their regular roughneck duties all while not being able to sit down at all except for there 30 minute break when they go in and eat. You almost couldn't pay me enough to do what they do. They do it all with out bitching and at a pace that few could keep up with. To top if off depending on what position they have they can potentially have hundreds of lives in their hands along with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment/well they are dealing with. And another thing that blows my mind is that people bitch about the price of gas which even at its highest was still cheaper than milk and OJ. The fact that oil is as cheap as it is even when prices are up still impresses the hell out of me. The amount of technology and work that it takes to produce a barrel of oil especially in DW is amazing and hard to understand without seeing it in person. A good analogy for drilling an well is like trying to hit a paper plate with a string of spaghetti from the top of the empire state building. The completion on the well we were working on my last job came in under budget at a cool 56M, which keep in mind is just one step in the process. You people need to quit your bitching about people getting paid for a more than honest days work and hope the little savings you are getting in gas prices will help when the overall economy of the area is affected.

Exactly. Production is a lagging indicator.

I just wanna say, I'm gonna remember who's calling people selfish for enjoying low gas prices when an isolated location in America suffers, in case these same people start to bitch about higher taxes for more welfare and social programs.

My point was about how production being so high here and in Canada has played a part in the oil prices plunging.

World economies and governments also played a part.

Either the oil industry misjudged how the surge in production would impact oil prices this much or simply didn't give a shite.
