When will people learn:
“Coon” - pejorative term referring to black people, is racist

“Coonass” - term of endearment for rural people who live the “cajun” lifestyle of fishing, hunting, french slang, cooking, drinking, Catholicism and music. Not necessarily restricted to only those of Cajun ancestry, but includes groups that largely assimilated into this regional culture (Canary Islanders, Germans, Irish, Native Americans, blacks, creoles, Poles, etc). Not racist

No Bob, it isn't but we took it back. Now, like the N word, people use it for all different reasons. But bottom line, the NAACP has ZERO claim to this word.

My great grandparents told stories about it being used as a slur, I personally listened. It wasn't a good word. But since we took it back it's become a multi-use word.

While that’s true, the reason we “took it back” is because a defining characteristic of our culture is to flatly refuse to see ourselves as victims. Cajuns are survivors and thrive in extreme conditions because of our family culture, our faith, our humor, and our fighting spirit.

And our self-deprecating humor!

This is all insane! My wife calls me that all the time, even tells people in public here in Houston she has trouble understanding my 'coon arse' talk! I remember when my Dad was still alive, he would tell people me & him were just a couple of old 'coonies'.
The NAACP needs to be shut down! Why don't people see it for what it is- a racist organization!!

Racoons are known to pilfer and forage for food especially at night. The term coon is short for raccoon. Because of the coloration of their coat it looks like they are wearing a mask while pilfering through your garbage can. I.e. they look and act like a thief.

A person can look similar when they cover their face and try to steal or pilfer.

The phrase coon hunting is when you let your hound dogs run a coon up in a tree at night and corner it. Then with your spot light and your rifle, you put its lights out.

I don’t know one Cajun or half Cajun or non Cajun Louisianian who’s put off by the term Coonass.
. I am a Coon arse and proud of it.

I am also dark complected and the older Coonass’s would call me “ T-Negre” when I was little.

Today I still call my adult Coonass son “ T-Negre “ or “Negre” as in “ Mais Negre , what the hell you doing?”

Clearly Andrew Pappas has no filter nor understanding of how insensitive, hurtful and racist his comments are," Mallory said. "His offensive comments are reprehensible and unacceptable. His judgment is lacking and shows his ignorance. he needs to apologize to the community and everyone should stand against his insensitivity, divisive and racist commentary and views."

I feel like this is just a copy and paste, fill in the names response from these groups. It’s been shown to require a groveling apology as a response, and they’re going to stick with it. Until the accused stand up to them and call bullshite in large numbers, it will continue.
