Who is in charge of the search? Malaysian Gov't?
Seems like this is the problem.

Electrical failure of some sort that killed the entire coms system?
Would have to be an unheard of catastrophic electrical system failure on (according to what I've read in this thread) the safest airliner ever built.

Had to be some newfangled terrorism. Suitcase EMP. Would explain transponder going off, no comm, no signals, and strange flight path. That plane glided into the water quietly with no working electronics.
I don't know.

They just said the transponder can be turned off by the pilots. I just don't understand why they would have the capability of turning it off.
I also think that it may be in the Indian Ocean.
The Malaysians really fricked up not releasing the turn of the plane immediately.

If it malfunctions and squawks an emergency code in error, they would turn it off, IIRC.

I think it is a boat. Looks like clouds are what supposedly appears to be the wing.
Yea, I see that too. But then again I would still send a search team to whatever spot that is pretty quickly.

Malfunction of the plane.
Trying to turnaround and find the airport without communications. We won't know without a black box.

Why wouldn't there be a cam in all cockpits? Streamed to a server so they can go and look in on things like this
Posted on 3/11/14 at 6:34 pm to Caplewood
Do you have any idea how much that would cost?
And how often exactly do planes vanish like this one did?
The supposed need isn't even close to equaling the cost to do something like that.

No
How expensive can some webcams be?

Pilots are members of unions. That is one huge reason.
Also no employee would go for being on camera. Doctors aren't under constant watch when performing surgery.

The transponder is operated by the pilots, they have to input a a 4 digit code that others will recognize them by. It also tells others their altitude. If there is an emergency, it's the pilots responsibility to put in the code.
3 Emergency codes for aircraft:
7500- hijacking
7600- lost comms
7700- general emergency

You mean transportation operated by poor people.

WiFi in airplanes isn't cheap.
Trying to add webcams that record feeds from 20k feet to a remote server has to be expensive.
And again, how often does this happen exactly?
Air travel is the safest travel I'm aware of. So much more dangerous to hop in your car and drive down the street. Do we all need dashboard cams? No.

quote:You obviously misunderstood what they said. Either that, the reporter is an idiot, or the plane spent 7.5 of those 8 hours grounded. Because I could easily search 30 square miles in my bass boat in much, much less than 8 hours.
They had a reporter on NBC riding in a c-130 searching for wreckage and said they covered 30 sq miles in 8 hours. The search area is about 10,000 sq miles.

I didn't realize they were for anything but relaying the coordinates of the plane...maybe they need one for that sole purpose and another with the other capabilities.
