btw..I heard the black boxes are only good for somewhere around 30 days in deep water
Air France boxes lasted two years in much deeper water then these would be in.

Anything new develop?
The Malaysian military is now claiming they tracked a plane believed to be MH370 back across the Malaysian peninsula and into the Straits of Malacca.
Which means...the plane probably flew for an additional hour/hour and a half, making no communication with the ground, flying low enough to be seen and witnessed by thousands of people, but being seen by no one.

Now I'm wondering if the passengers even knew the flight wasnt going to beijing. It was the middle of the night, many were probably asleep. Could have been a secret hijacking.

Yeah, I'd assume if they had some mechanical issue and had to turn back to KL, the pilot would have announced this, and then at least a couple passengers would have tried to text/email family to tell them they wouldn't be in Beijing.

Pretty much all of my flights in the last few years have had in flight tracking that shows your position along the flight path. If that was on their the passengers probably looked at it and said wtf.

What if the area's they flew over were pretty remote where very few people saw it and if they did, they don't have real communications or didn't think much of a plane flying over them.

The pilot would have called that in to someone on the ground, though.

I guess this turned out to be unrelated?

Was it not the middle of the night?

Like 1:30am. Probably flying over land between 3 and 6am.

Whatever became of the cabin door they said they found?

Can you turn off a plane transponder so that it can't be tracked at all? Or would it still appear on certain radars?

I think the signal from the black boxes is active for 30 days or so based on battery life. The boxes themselves last much longer.

Turning off the transponder would remove it's identity from the screen. It would still show up on radar as an unknown target unless it flew low enough to avoid it.

How hard is it to switch off the transponder? Just a switch in the cockpit? Is there some type of alert to flight tracking systems that it has been specifically turned off?

It's easy, it's a switch, if you are in a congested area, some times you will be asked to turn it off to clear clutter from the ATC's screen.
