The leads on this event are drying up quickly.

Not to sound morbid, but every morning I awake as if it's Christmas and flip to the news hoping for a new development... only to be disappointed again by socks.
This is one of the most fascinating stories ever, but the interest will go away quickly if there are no additional developments by the end of the week.

That can occur at 45,000 feet while the pilot is safe.
Can a 777 with 200+ people on board get up to 45k and stay there?

Investigators do not know if anyone aboard the plane even tried to make a call. One theory is that someone may have intentionally depressurized the plane as it soared to an unusually high altitude right after the turnaround, which would have quickly rendered passengers and flight attendants unconscious, pilots said. Whoever diverted the plane could have disabled the release of oxygen masks.

Sounds like a job for he NSA

Plane isn't designed to fly above 42k ( I think). Hard for the plane to fly at that altitude because plane feels like it is stalling ( engines deficiencies at that altitude?).

Service ceiling is 43k. It can fly above that but probably not for an extended period of time without malfunction.
Is it possible for 30 min? Likely.

Idk. They tried it in the simulator and had big time issues.

I'll never fly again

I really have no idea what happened here(like everyone else obviously).
But, I'll tell you what makes no sense to me.
It makes no sense to me that someone was sharp enough to plan how to make this plane disappear and avoid radar but didn't have a final plan for where to put it down and so it crashed. If his whole goal was to crash it, he coulda just nose dived.
Hence, I find it highly unlikely that this plane is busted up somewhere. Do I think the passengers are alive? Doubtful. But the perp seems to have been too bright to have forgotten to plan the last step.

Why does everyone keep saying it has to be 45k? Didn't they say anywhere around 25k while being depressurized is enough to kill everyone?

why because a pilot can turn off the air supply?
He can also nose dive the plane. Your life is already in the hands of the pilot. He is supposed to be well trained.
This is just a sad isolated incident.
I just don't get why they would do it. From all accounts a pilot in Malaysia lives much better than a pilot in the US.
(pay vs cost of living)
(when I was in flight school almost everyone else was Indian, they would tell me to train for ATP and move there. Said a pilot in India is like a plastic surgeon here in terms of standard of living.)

Well the Australian have now agreed to search the arc area near Perth where the CIA keeps stating they think it's crashed. This would support the decompression/ran out of gas argument. If they don't find it then it's in the northern arc area in western china (where the bbc reporter yesterday tweeted that malaysian authorities think it is (or Afghanistan)). Will be interesting if the Aussies come up empty.
