Why are planes equipped so that pilots can turn off beacons and other tracking devices? I seem to remember that the 9/11 hijackers were able to turn those off. Why would a pilot be allowed to do that?
Air traffic is only part of it. Another reason why is because aircraft usually have more than1 transponder as a failsafe. They cannot both be used at the same time however, so they must be switchable.
And I believe I read somewhere that maintenance is another reason why they're switchable. That is, if they're trying to troubleshoot a problem and want to isolate out the transponder as a cause, just turn it off.

It sure seems like their jobs would be much easier now than it was. 20-30 years ago.

The ground crews should be able to turn it back on is all I am saying. Or have a 3rd one that is only able to be turned on or off by the ground.

Yea if they detect smoke or something, they can turn it off. If the smoke stops, its coming from that. If not, its something else. Thats how we fight our fires in the aircraft. Also, most systems have circuit breakers that will pop and turn the system off if it malfunctioned or if caught fire.

While it would be nice, i don't see it happening. If ATC or any other aircraft wants them to squawk they use the radios to ask them to turn it on.

I did read on a CNN article that the sharp turns that the craft made were preprogrammed into the guidance system, which points the finger even more at the cockpit crew.

Im curious on what the police will find in the pilots' "flight simulator" at his house

I've read over and over about all the redundancies this plane has regarding electrical failure. With what happened on 9-11 and on this flight it seems they would do the same with being able to track the plane.

I find it odd that they think it's odd for a pilot to own a flight simulator. He's a pilot.

True. I think they're hoping to find flight plans or practiced routes. I don't a pilot that has a simulator, although I don't find it odd this guy does.

Maybe so...but unless they find something that leads them to an obscure and secret landing strip (that leads them to the plane), or something that says "crash here", I don't understand the value.

How could authorities possibly know that?

Damn good question.

They pulled off a pretty sophisticated feat. I would be shocked if they left something in their homes that would help the investigation at all.

There was rumor reported earlier that there was 20 tonnes of gold on the MH370. I don't believe it.
But this makes you maybe thing about it. LINK Plane left Singapore for India and was diverted to Kl because of a suspicious package was found in the toilet. The package turned out to be gold.
If there was really that much gold on MH370 that would explain some motive. BUT, who ships 20 tonnes of gold on a commercial aircraft?

Turned off transponder and changed course? It is unknown if they pulled anything off (landed) or that this was the result of a pilot committing suicide.

They'll come up with something.

This is true. I just lean more to the side of this plane is in one piece somewhere. If the pilot was committing suicide I don't believe he would have been taking such evasive maneuvers.

Commercial airlines are considers to be one of the safest ways to ship diamonds and other valuables. Outside of a crash they are pretty safe from the moment they are put on the plane.
