If the plane landed a week ago and we are still looking in the ocean 1,000 miles away then we can suspect they are ahead of us. I know we can't assume anything but we should be prepared for the notion that these people know what they are doing.
ETA: A hijack of this sophistication and magnitude isn't done for kicks and giggles. The objective is something pretty big.

We need to think out the box, assuming no crash. Something different, something new.
All the old-school 9-11 type things are outmoded. I am sure they have something new and innovative planned.
If it's China, then what would do the most damage? Drinking water, electricity? I think they have something totally new in mind.

That something like this was successful is impressive, to say the least. Before this, I wouldn't have thought it possible to do with all the tracking resources available today. It was more than just a pilot being able to fly a 777, it took a tremendous amount of knowing and planning to do this.
Assuming the plane isn't at the bottom of an ocean somewhere, I'm guessing that the USA knows where the plane is and is working behind the scenes to rescue the passengers.
I still don't understand the motive though. I agree, the objective was/is something pretty big.

No unidentified plane would get anywhere near our coast. No way our air defense systems aren't better than Malaysia. Thing would be shot down hundreds of miles off the coast.

They know it's in the Central Asia region. The plane flew for 7 hours.
