How high was the Challenger when it blew up? They have video so I know you could see it with human eye.
EDIT: Nope, checked and I was WAY wrong. Typically 100-500 mile orbits, depending. The stratosphere, where the shuttle blew up, is 31 miles.

Has anyone mentioned atlas shrugged

According to that you can see 238.9 miles if the object is 38000 feet
You can see a little bit farther than that because you have to add in the height of the observer above sea level also:
Distance in kilometers ˜ 3.57(vhB + vhL) where hB is the height of the observer in meters above the ocean and hL is the height of the object above the ocean in meters.
hB = Observer on an oil platform 200’ above the ocean = 60.96m
hL = Airliner at 38,000’ above ocean = 11,582.4m
3.57(v60.96m + v11,582.4m) = 3.57(7.80 + 107.62) = 3.57(115.42) = 412.05km = 256 miles.
Still....256 miles is a loooooong way to see!

That futuristic weapon that looks like a red arrow supports the UFO theory.

The plane went missing on the 8th and this was taking on the 9th. I think this could be it. Maybe some closure for the families.

The guy on the oil rig thought the object was near the surface of the ocean right? So what if the bright light (fireball) happened at 38k feet...could he have seen it from 200+ miles but due to curvature of the earth thought it was near the surface of the ocean?
I have been in a plane at 38000+ ft and more than 200 miles out from Houston a on a clear night and have seen flares at the plants at Texas City.

Is it not VERY rare for an aircraft to cruise at 38k ft? I think most are around 30-34k?

IMO, with the resolution on that satellite/camera the Chinese probably read the serial number on the part before claiming it was a piece of floatsam.

When you show the airplane superimposed there it does kind of look like an airplane. Maybe

Simplistic question: which way is the current going as he described? He sees plane down closer to his position, debris drift further away? I think this guy witnessed it down.

My thinking as well. The raw images probably show enough detail for the Chinese to have enough certainty to release the images without much trepidation.
Hell it probably took them the 3 days just to degrade the images enough to go public.

Me either but I can see the moon and stars...how far away are they?
there is very little atmosphere between earth and space.
OTOH, while looking across the earth, the atmosphere reduces visibility.

quote:No one honestly still believes those satellite images show the plane, do they?. . . I mean, we've known about the images for 4+ hours. No telling how long the Chinese have known about them. Ships and/or planes were around that "item" within minutes.
Chinese sat image with superimposed plane for reference.
Hmmmmmmmmmm. I was leaning toward sat images are nothing to maybe they are on to something. Plus I don't think the Chinese would release these without a high degree of certainty.
It's actually pretty hilarious that cable news networks are continuing to lead with "Break News: Chinese Satellites Spot Debris," over four hours (at least!) after the images were made public.
ETA: Not to mention, anything a Chinese satellite can find, American satellites have already found.
ETA: And it's nearly 9:00 A.M. in Malaysia. Tiger Droppings has known about the Chinese satellite images since before day-break. Pretty sure that area has been investigated by now. And if that "item" were the plane, we would've heard about it by now.

Commercial flight levels extend up to 51,000 feet, but larger jets like 737, 747, AB380 have a maximum service ceiling around 41,000- 43,000, they usually operate lower where the engines are more efficient.
Gulfstream, Cessna Citation, Lear, all have business jets that can hit 51,000.

Nope and where does it say they have?

Nope
quote:Nowhere that I've read. I would just assume that if the Chinese were searching for a plane with over 100 Chinese citizens on board, and a Chinese satellite took a picture of what appeared to be a downed plane in the ocean, that the Chinese would have explored that area within the three subsequent days.
where does it say they have?
