This could be 100% wrong but I've heard a lot of the recent major wildfires become massive because of large fuel loads.

Many of the communities in California refuse to allow controlled burns that would decrease fuel loads due to concerns of pollution and stuff. So they are living around what's pretty much a tinder box

It’s hard to do control burns here because of the Santa Ana winds. It’s too much of a risk.

Speaking of, winds near my house are just starting to get stronger. Going to be a long night north in LA.

They do prescribed burns in Cali but the time frame to do them safely is short.... 2 to 3 weeks a year. And doing burns around developed areas takes a lot of manpower which often isn't available. The problem this year is Cali got a lot of rain earlier this year which caused a lot of plant growth which is now fuel. Add in that the Santa Anna winds this year have been some of the strongest on record and its a recipe for hades.

Haven’t the wildfires been happening forever though? Long before we settled there?

I have some friends who have already evacuated their pets and themselves.

The wind speeds and directions, live time, on www.windy.com are really good, according to friends out there.

And downed live electric lines are a problem with winds + underbrush and canyons.

Tomorrow looks ever worse for them

These started by arson or something benign?

I know a good many people in the region. One has already evacuated from Ojai. Bad scene there for sure.

That video is insane, huh?

~80% of my clients are in California, with probably 75%+ of those California clients being in the Los Angeles area. The names on those interstate signs are ones I've driven past countless times.

This was sad to watch in the wine country area, and it is sad to watch now. :/

If there HAS to be a wildfire there, just let Hollywood burn.

All the hot air from Ted Lieu and Adam Schiff ignited the brush.

That is freaking insane. It seems they have more and more wildfires ever single year. Why is this pretty much only a problem in Cali? I never hear of wildfires anywhere else and yet there is 30+ fires in Cali every year. Also, it seems like the amount of fires is increasing too. Is that the case or am I only paying more attention lately?

Couple of updates

#BREAKING: The #RyeFire is 7,000 acres and is 10% contained

#BREAKING: The #CreekFire is now 12,605 acres and is 5% contained.

#BREAKING: Santa Barbara County is being added into the Unified Command of the #ThomasFire due to the northwest advance of the fire.

#BREAKING: The #LittleMountainFire is now 100% contained (San Bernardino)

#ThomasFire: Extreme fire behavior near Gridley Road in Ojai. Crews unable to save homes in the area. Evacuating as many people as possible.

#ThomasFire: For reference, 90,000 acres is about 140 square miles.

There were a number of wildfires in the Southeast last year during the drought. Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg being the biggest one that comes to mind.

I think the Cali wildfires just happen near more people so they get more attention nationally.

Texas has had some bad ones the last few years. Wiped out a lot of homes in central texas recently. And DFW has some but they usually don't do much damage. South Dakota has bad wildfires too.....really all of the western states. But the population is so big in cali that the wildfires do a lot more damage than in other, less populated areas.
