re: Off-duty cop shot and killed a non-verbal, intellectually disabled man in a Cali Costco

Outside of the man having a weapon, there are ZERO scenarios where shooting someone in a freaking Costco is okay.
Objectively I would agree, and pulling out a gun in a crowded place like this is problematic especially if the cop was off duty. Details and statements from witnesses will be telling, although the cop shooting the parents , especially the mom does not look good. Mom does not look like a particularly threatening person

So we are to believe that Costco doesn't have cameras down every aisle?

Need a better perspective, but that guy looks pretty big.
That doesn't warrant getting killed in a box store. That's why cops should have a minimum height requirement.

No
But, if the deceased or any one else around him did not have a weapon or pull a weapon and the cop is off duty it could be problematic for the off duty cop. As an off duty cop, unless there was some felony or imminent danger to others in an obvious sense. The police officer being not on duty actually has a duty to retreat and back off any escalation.....walk away

I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but I worked with people with mental disabilities for 10 years. That picture is either the best picture ever of the non verbal guy or he is not completely non verbal. My guess is the guy doesn't speak well and is lower IQ but that doesn't mean he can't use basic communication. Also as said, where were his parents? My guess is they were the worst kind of helicopter parents and over sympathized their son's disabilities and let him do whatever they hell he wanted.

What a sad situation.
Parents of nonverbal/aggressive autistic children live in daily fear that their child will do something that is perceived by others in the wrong way and lead to social ostracizing at best and a physical confrontation at worst.
I bet the cop was in his own bubble shopping with his family and the autistic "kid" had some sort of interaction with them that he perceived as threatening. Due to his training and natural paranoia that comes with being a cop in a liberal gun/cop hating area he was quick to pull his weapon.
The parents of the autistic "kid" probably witnessed it all unfold, seeing their worst nightmare of the last 20 years come true before their eyes. They likely were screaming at the cop (who at the time appeared as just a dude at Costco waving a gun around, aka a lunatic) and possibly even tried to physically prevent him from killing their son.
Off duty cop meanwhile is fearful for his family and sees a bunch of brown skinned people yelling and screaming at him, so he shoots them all.
Sad outcome for all involved.

Which part?
I have friends who are LEOs and friends who have severely aggressive autistic kids. Not sure how pointing out both of their possible perspectives in this situation is satire.
Unless you are referring to the gun/cop hating Californians or the shooting at brown people. Those details were just to add color to the story.

We'll have to see the video, but if the investigation does not show any outward menacing behavior like a hands on assault by the deceased or his parents and no weapon or intimation of a weapon like it looking like someone was reaching for something......it's bad and if all this was was a dispute over some frozen food or a misunderstanding about an innocent bump, the OFF DUTY officer really does not have a leg to stand on. I don't carer what state you are in, there is a high standard of care that an off duty police officer has to take in a public place and just spouting " I was in fear for my life and the life of my child" does not cut it.
He does not get to use the get out of jail free statement nor does he he get the benefit of his PBA attorney on this ......unless there was a crime being committed.
Please don't think there are not some real cowboy cops out there, because there are......see the Mesa, AZ incident last year

Do you honestly think this cop just decided to start shooting people randomly?
Posted on 6/17/19 at 3:46 pm to LNCHBOX
When I was right out of law school and working at the Orleans Parish DA's office I saw and heard of things by cops and civilians that would boggle the mind. Things that would make you ask "What the frick were you thinking" So my answer is, "I've dealt with what you asked"
Posted on 6/17/19 at 3:53 pm to KiwiHead
You are spouting an awful lot of BS for someone that (law school and ADA experience) should know better.

You are entitled to live with your own confirmation bias. But the actions of police officers in the shooting of ostensibly an unarmed citizen in what is otherwise a peaceful environment demands the utmost scrutiny. Which I am sure he is getting.
I will make this prediction , this officer will not be on the Corona PD much longer irrespective if the determination is that this was a justified action from a criminal standpoint.

if the cop's story is true, I don't have an issue with the cop protecting himself and child.
What could possibly transpire inside a Costco that would legitimately warrant shooting a mentally disabled guy and his two parents?

Better tighten up that loose one turn!
