has anyone else looked at the flooding in NYC from IDA overnight?

pretty wild and atleast 4 dead so far. The videos of the basement appartments and the subway systems looks like someone is pumping water in, pretty crazy.

I didnt realize though that NYC was so ill equiped to handle rain. some places flooded after only 6" over 2-3 hours. thats a lot, but not enough to have as much water as they do on the street. Some places received alot more.

also had tornados in new jersey yesterday

Why do they choose to live in an area so prone to flooding?

If you’re not in an area that typically floods, that’s a fairly high rate of rain in that short of time.

People would think it was the apocalypse if it rained like that up here.

Depends on the soil in the area. If it's clay I can tell you that flooding happens quickly.

We are in a desert, so we get 13" of rain per year.

We've been here 4 years and I've seen it rain once to where it was similar to a normal rain back home. And people were talking about it for days afterward.

People will say "we're gonna get some rain" and it sprinkles on and off for 6 hours.

That amount of rain I would imagine would have news stations on standby.

Yeah, you design drainage infrastructure on historical storm frequency. Their capacity is probably half or less than what you would find along the Gulf.

NYC averages (per Google) 47 inches in a year.

6 inches in a 2-3 hour period is a high rate of rain. We get about the same amount here a year and that would cause flooding for us as well. Even on the Ohio.

With a combination of soil that doesn’t allow for a lot of saturation and large swaths of development, the rain has to go somewhere. And most sub pumps are going to struggle to keep up at that rate.

im a civil so understand all of the drainage issues....i just assumed NYC got way more rain than that on average especially in the winter.

guess you learn something new everyday.

Feel bad for them, but after all the shite they talked...i dont feel too bad.

only thing that is going to suck is now....news wont have the spotlight on NOLA. SELA is about to get the SWLA treatment from the national news. Only thing they will talk about is NYC and in a year you would assume IDA only hit NYC.
